PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Since the last newsletter our students and staff have been very busy and have so much to be proud of. The talents and success in all areas: academics, athletics and fine arts are something to celebrate. As you read this newsletter you will note the many accomplishments of our students. Congratulations to all of them for their hard work, motivation and spirit, we’re proud of their endeavours and the honours they bring to Queen Elizabeth Secondary. Some notable recent events:

·         The first formal Report Card from Semester 2 was issued on April 15th and followed by Parent/Teacher Interviews on April 29th. Many thanks to all the parents who came to discuss the progress of their children and continue the excellent connection with our school.

·         We had our annual “Roots and Rhythm” celebration on April 22nd. Not only was this an amazing showcase of many cultures and extraordinary talents of QE students, we raised over $7,600 for the Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Children’s Emergency Ward.

·         Congratulations to the Planning 10 classes who participated in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative sponsored by the Toskan Castle Foundation. The  Planning classes researched local grassroots charities and in working groups prepared proposals for funding a local charity. The top four presentations presented a ten-minute brief to a panel to determine which charity would receive a donation of $5,000 from the Toskan Castle Foundation.

I was overwhelmed with the quality of work from the four teams involved. The presentations were exceptional and the students should be commended for their efforts and concern for social responsibility. The four teams included:

*         Surrey Food Bank: Jasmine Athwal, Erica Ganal, Nelly Muja, Jasmine Sandhu

*         Learning Disabilities Association: Vibhuti Aggarwal, Stefanie Madariaga, Ramn Mann, Parm Rai

*         Caring Hearts for Underprivileged Children Society: Nivedita Badhan, Tharngeet Kooner, Aasia Rahguzar, Raveena Sahota

*         Surrey Urban Mission Society:  Ama Danso, and Jasmine Virk

The Surrey Urban Mission Society Team was awarded this year’s prize as their presentation stood out as one that demonstrated a clear vision, high capacity and strong level of understanding.

Congratulations to Ms. Muirhead who organized QE’s involvement in the “Young Blood for Life” Challenge. Last year over 37,000 youth donated blood which represented 9% of all blood donors.  The challenge officially ended on April 30th and QE was 27th in Canada, which is an outstanding achievement. To all the students who participated – well done, we are proud of your community support by giving “the gift of life”.

The “Grade 12 Portfolio Interviews” were a great success. Over 250 students participated in the interviews on April 20th & 21st. On behalf of Ms. Beck, Ms. Clift , Mr. Sardinha, I would like to thank William Arnold, Kylie Baillie, Albert Beck, Sonja Buchanan, Cameron Clark, June Demcheson, Simon Gau, Eric Glanville, Patricia Leiser, Andrew Lim, Pam Manery, Richard Manery, Mike McKay, Sue Murthi, Carol Oleksiuk, Dorota Peacock, Jilia Poole, Joe Ruffeski, Doug Strachan and Winnie Wan for taking the time to interview our Grade 12 students. The volunteer interviewers were impressed with the students’ preparation and effort in organizing their portfolios, as well as the students’ maturity and poise.

On the afternoon of Earth Day, April 22nd, the Hub at Queen Elizabeth was the scene of learning and fun as many students took part in the Seventh Annual Earth Day Fair. Students presented individual, small and large group projects addressing issues such as recycling, water consumption and alternative energy and transportation.

Ms. Nelson, Ms. Johnson and Mr. Tattam and the Dance Team recently travelled to Kelowna to compete and had a very successful trip capturing third place in the Senior Dance Competition.  School Organizers in Kelowna shared the following comments about QE Dancers, “You have some very talented and special dancers and they gave us a night to remember”.

Coach Martin and the Jr. Girls’ Soccer Team have qualified for the Fraser Valley Playoffs.

The Senior Girls’ Rugby Team has qualified for the Provincial Championships at Semiahmoo Secondary from May 26th to May 29th.

As the end of the school year comes to a close, many staff and parents have committed considerable time and effort to organizing a host of activities that include:

Friday, May 28th, the Grade 12 Dinner/Dance at Newlands Golf & Country Club. “Dry Grad 10” will follow this event. The parent organizing committee has booked a harbour cruise of Vancouver and our students will enjoy a number of fun filled activities. Prizes will be awarded throughout the night.

Monday, May 31st, the Commencement Ceremony at Chandos Pattison Auditorium to honour our Class of 2010.

Tuesday, June 1st, the Athletic Banquet where we recognize the performance of our athletes and contributions of their coaches.

Wednesday, June 2nd, the Awards Ceremony will be held at the school to honour our Academic and Citizenship Awards for Grade 8 to 11.

As we head into the final month, students should focus on the successful completion of their classes, especially those with provincial exams. For students this means completing assignments, handing them in on time, and reviewing for their final exams in mid June. All students are required to be in classes through June 18th. Grade 10 to 12 students will be writing Provincial Exams from June 21 to 29th and cannot be rescheduled.

Finally, I would like to recognize the leadership of our Grade 12 students this year and thank them for the many contributions they have made to the school over the past five years. On behalf of the entire Queen Elizabeth Community, I wish you every success in the years to come.
