PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Our first semester ended with exams and final assessments, and semester two began smoothly on February 1st.  Results from the Ministry Exams in Grades 10, 11 and 12, will be accessible to students on the web at www.bced.gov.ca/exams. Students will need to log on using their PEN number to access their exam scores.

Report cards for the first semester were distributed to students on February 4th. If you have not seen your son’s or daughter’s report card, feel free to call the office. Our students have displayed a high level of achievement and their successes are reflected in the Honor Roll for Semester 1. In this reporting period, 302 students (22%) achieved 1st Class Honors (3.5-4.00 GPA) and 292 students (21%) achieved Honor Roll status (3.00 – 3.49 GPA). A total of 43% of our students received Honor Roll standing – Well Done Royals!

Our Grade 12 students are busy making their plans for post graduation. Many are applying to universities, colleges and other programs. Please contact our Counselling and Careers Department to seek further information about options and particular programs. In addition, Grade 12 students will receive a “Graduation Transitions” progress report on March 4th outlining any deficiencies. Students in Grade 12 must complete this requirement and participate in exit interviews which take place on April 20th and 21st.

Failure to complete these requirements will result in your son or daughter not being eligible for graduation in June. If you have any questions regarding this report, please call our Career Education Department.

A reminder to all parents that second semester Interim Report Cards “I” are issued on March 4th. These reports will be distributed only to those students who are achieving borderline or marginal achievement in a course.

Parent of students who are receiving two or more “I Reports” will be contacted by the school administration to attend Parent/Teacher Interviews scheduled in late April. In addition, parents will be contacted to give permission for their child to attend the “After School Tutoring Program” on Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. A team comprised of teachers and peer tutors will support these students and help them realize their academic goals. We highly encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity to improve their performance.

Course selection for the 2010-11 school year is almost complete. This is one of the most critical decisions students have to make. It is important students choose courses  wisely with an eye towards senior secondary possibilities, graduation requirements, post secondary and career interest. Course selection booklets are given to every student to facilitate discussions between school, students and parents. It is very helpful to have parents involved in this process.  Once students have selected courses there is limited time to make changes.

The options your son or daughter has after graduation may well depend upon choices made now and careful planning will ensure that a solid foundation for the future career opportunities and educational placements are in place.

On the Athletic front, I also want to acknowledge the efforts of all our coaches and athletes who compete for our school and demonstrate continued high levels of sportsmanship and integrity. In particular, I want to acknowledge the Senior Boys’ Basketball and Wrestling Team, under the guidance of Mr. Mitro and Mr. Kissinger, who have had a very successful season. The Senior Boys’ Basketball Team finished first in their zone and qualified for the prestigious 32 team Fraser Valley Championships. The Wrestling Team had 10 wrestlers qualify for the Provincial Championships which took place at Abbotsford. Congratulations to the following wrestlers: Gurpreet B., Aman B., Sukhan C., Rattanjot K., Usman K., Chris P., Preeti R., Pavin T., Victor V. and Wonderful W.

Finally, thank you to all the parents, teachers and community who support our students in a variety of ways, you commitment to the students of Queen Elizabeth is greatly appreciated. I am always happy to hear from you and welcome your feedback.
