Courses
SCIENCE 8
Recommendation: n/a
This is the course which introduces students to the study of Science in secondary school. Students learn about cells and body systems, optics and the human eye, fluid systems and water systems on earth. Students learn the skills of doing science: observe, classify, deduce, etc. They also develop the skills needed to work in the laboratory: measuring, recording, dissecting, etc.
SCIENCE 9
Recommendation: Science 8
This course broadens the student’s study of science. Students learn about space exploration, reproduction, chemical reactions and electricity. They continue to develop the skills needed to work in the laboratory: measuring, recording, dissecting, etc.
SCIENCE 10
Provincial Exam
Recommendation: Science 9
This is the last of the general science courses in secondary school, which studies all of the major branches of Science. In the course students study eco systems, chemical reactions, motion, energy transfer and plate tectonics. They also continue to develop the skills needed to work in the laboratory: measuring, recording, dissecting, etc. There is a provincial exam in this course which accounts for 20% of the final grade.
BIOLOGY 11
Recommendation: Demonstrated strength in Biology section of Science 10
In this course, students will study the basic processes that make living things unique and current theories about how organisms have evolved since life began. Students will spend a major part of the term studying the great variety of living things found on the earth. They will examine (with dissections) the structure of organisms to see how they are similar and different from each other. Course work involves assignments, labs, tests, and individual and group projects. There is a final exam in this course.
CHEMISTRY 11
Recommendation: Demonstrated strength in Chemistry section of Science 10
This is the course which most post secondary schools require of science students. It builds on the ideas about matter learned in the junior science classes. Students study matter, atomic theory, and chemical reactions. Students will need a calculator and should have a good understanding of mathematics and simple algebra. Course work involves assignments, labs and tests. There is a final exam in this course.
CHEMISTRY 11
X1 BLOCK
Recommendation: Demonstrated strength in Chemistry section of Science 10
This is the course which most post secondary schools require of science students. It builds on the ideas about matter learned in the junior science classes. Students study matter, atomic theory, and chemical reactions. Students will need a calculator and should have a good understanding of mathematics and simple algebra. Course work involves assignments, labs and tests. There is a final exam in this course. This course may be run as part of a flexible schedule—September to January— 4–5 times a week—7:30—8:45 pm.
EARTH SCIENCE 11
Recommendation: Science 10
This is an introductory course to the field of geological sciences. The course will examine rocks and minerals, geological process, plate tectonics, and historical geology. It is essential that students have a solid foundation in all of the sections of junior science. Besides leading to the Geology 12 course, this course is an excellent introduction to Geography 12. There is a final exam in this course.
PHYSICS 11
Recommendation: Demonstrated strength in Physics section of Science 10
Physics 11 is an introductory course that focuses on how the basic concepts and theories of physics are applied in various technologies and are linked to everyday life. It is an extension of the physics units studied in the junior sciences. Students use a combination of hands-on activities and projects to investigate topics such as motion, force, work, energy, light, sound and nuclear physics. Students will need a calculator and should have a good understanding of mathematics and simple algebra. There is a final exam in this course.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 11
Recommendation: Science 10
This course will satisfy the science requirement for high school graduation but is not recognized by most post-secondary schools. (Check with the post-secondary school). Science and Technology is a course that will help students to gain a better understanding and appreciation for the history of science, technology, and human thought; to learn ethical, responsible decision-making; and to learn to take innovative approaches to the challenges of life. An emphasis will be placed on challenging students to develop a conscious awareness of their personal values and decisions, and the need for responsible actions in terms of science and technology. The development of critical-thinking skills in the exploration and formation of personal ethics is also an important aspect of this course. Through a variety of activities and projects students will learn about invention, entrepreneurship, and experimentation through the practical application of skills that are required in business, science, formal debate and technology. There is a final exam in this course.
BIOLOGY 12
Provincial Exam
Recommendation: Minimum C+ in Biology 11 (Chemistry 11 is strongly recommended).
This course examines in detail the workings of a cell (its parts and how they function together to keep it alive) and the structure and functioning of the human body. Students will study the major systems including; nervous, excretory, circulatory, respiratory, reproductive and digestive. There is a provincial examination for this course.
CHEMISTRY 12
Provincial Exam
Recommendation: A minimum C+ in Chemistry 11. (Math 11 strongly recommended).
This course continues some of the ideas learned in Chemistry 11. Students will make in depth studies of the topics: solutions, chemical reactions and acids/bases. There is a provincial examination for this course. It is recommended that students taking this course should have obtained a C+ or better in Chemistry 11.
PHYSICS 12
Provincial Exam
Recommendation: A minimum C+ in Physics 11 and Math 11
Physics 12 is an advanced course for those who might be expecting to study science (especially Physics) at a postsecondary school. Students use a combination of learning activities (including hands-on activities and projects) to develop their analytical, experimental and problem solving skills. The topics in the course focus on mechanics (forces and motion), energy and electromagnetism. There is a provincial examination for this course.
GEOLOGY 12
Recommendation: Earth Science 11
This course is designed for those students who are interested in studying the Earth’s structures and/or are planning on taking geology courses at university. The course is an in depth study of earth materials, historical geology, structural geology, physical geology and economic geology. There is a provincial examination for this course. It is recommended that students taking this course should have obtained a C+ or better in Earth Science 11.
