PHYSICAL EDUCATION 8– COED
Recommendation: n/a
The goal of Physical Education is to develop a positive attitude toward life long physical activity. In Grade 8, students will be exposed to a wide variety of activities. The three major curriculum organizers are:
- Safety, Fair Play and Leadership
- Movement
- Active Living
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9 - COED
Recommendation: PE 8
The goal of Physical Education is to develop a positive attitude toward life long physical activity. In grade 9, students will experience a wide variety of activities and develop a basic level of competence. The three major curriculum organizers are:
- Safety, Fair Play and Leadership
- Movement
- Active Living
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10 – COED
Recommendation: PE 9
The goal of Physical Education is to develop a positive attitude toward life long physical activity. In grade 10, students will continue to develop competencies in a variety of activities. The three major curriculum organizers are:

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10 – X BLOCK – COED
Recommendation: PE 9
The goal of Physical Education is to develop a positive attitude toward life long physical activity. In grade 10, students will continue to develop competencies in a variety of activities. The three major curriculum organizers are:
- Safety, Fair Play and Leadership
- Movement
- Active Living
This course may be run as part of a flexible schedule— September to January or February to June—4 times per week—7:30 am—8:45 am.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 11 – COED
Recommendation: PE 10
Course enhancement fees may apply.
The curriculum for this course focuses on promoting healthy attitudes and regular physical activity as important parts of each students lifestyle. The curriculum has three major organizers:
- Safety, Fair Play and Leadership
- Movement
- Active Living
Students may be exposed to many community-based activities and may participate in emergency first aid training if students wish to pay the optional enrichment fee. Students may be required to provide transportation to off-site activities if they are incorporated into the course. Students will also be required to perform school and/or community service.
Community—based leisure and recreational activities (i.e. bowling, rock climbing, golf, etc.) may be incorporated into the PE 11 course if students are willing to pay an optional activity enrichment fee.
AEROBIC FITNESS 11
Recommendation: PE 10
Course enhancement fees may apply.
This course is open to students in grade 11 and 12 Aerobic Fitness will allow students to explore the components of physical fitness through aerobic exercise. Students will improve their level of physical fitness, while learning the principles and theories of aerobic fitness training. Students will participate in various forms of aerobic activity such as: low and high impact aerobics, sport specific training, running, power walking, weight training, core conditioning, balance training and yoga/ stretch classes. To complement physical training, they will be introduced to the basic concepts of nutrition and strategies to implement changes to their dietary habits. Students will also learn to set realistic fitness goals and learn to develop a plan to be successful in reaching those goals. Part of the course may also involve exploring fitness opportunities in the community and to become educated consumers i.e.—what to look for in a gym/personal trainer, what to look for when purchasing fitness equipment for home use. Students will be provided with a safe, effective environment to improve their health and fitness through aerobic activity. Community—based fitness activities (i.e. yoga, aerobics, spin classes, etc. ) may be incorporated into the AEROBIC FITNESS 11 course if students are willing to pay an optional activity enrichment fee.
SUPER FIT 11
Recommendation: Must have a B or higher in PE 10
Note: This course is open to students in grade 11 or 12.
Super Fit 11 is a fitness and conditioning course designed to help students better understand the effects of exercise on the human body. This course will introduce students to human anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, kinetics, nutrition, training principles, sports related injuries and prevention, and exercise science. Lastly, this course will allow students to design and follow their very own personal fitness program, and receive course credit for getting into shape! This is not a competitive sports class. Students will be in the classroom and weight room, and may also participate in various activities in the community such as swiss ball, spin, sports conditioning, and pilates. This course will be of use to anyone who might be interested in fitness, nutrition, physiotherapy, personal training, kinesiology, PE teaching, medicine, sports medicine, coaching, or someone who wants to learn how to design their own fitness programs they can follow. This is very much an individual fitness class designed for anyone at any level of fitness. This course is not designed for the “super fit person”, as all students will participate at their own level and pace. Community—based fitness activities may be incorporated into the Super Fit course if students are willing to pay an optional activity enrichment fee.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 12– COED
Recommendation: PE 11 or special permission from PE Department.
Course enhancement fees may apply.
Themes for this course are sport and leisure pursuits, and leadership. Community activities from Grade 11 may be expanded upon if students wish to pay the optional enrichment fee. Students may be required to provide transportation to off-site activities if they are incorporated into the course. Students will also be required to perform school and/or community service. PEER TUTORING 12 PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Prerequisites—successful interview with instructor.
Special Training, Facilities or Equipment required: Bosu balls, agility ladders, agility hurdles, Fitballs, skipping ropes, weighted balls, mats. Students will learn how to use the above equipment in an aerobic fitness setting. Students will then learn how to instruct younger students in how to use the equipment. Course Synopsis: Peer Tutoring 12—Physical Education will provide students with the opportunity to work on personal aerobic fitness to allow them to be good role models for younger students. Students will be able to apply knowledge learned in class sessions to teach concepts and skills to younger students. Rationale: Peer Tutoring 12—Physical Education allows students to explore how students learn through movement. Peer tutors are provided an opportunity to access relevant knowledge and apply it in a physical education setting. Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience that can be applied to the tutoring arena, but also applies to other real-life experiences.
