Language study at Clayton Heights begins with French 8. After successful completion of that course, students may continue on with French right through to Grade 12. Others may wish to study Spanish beginning with the introduction to Spanish course at the Grade 9 level. Spanish can also be taken up to Grade 12. Some students choose to take both French and Spanish while others choose neither.
Students planning to attend a post secondary institution after High School should be aware of the entry requirements which often stipulate language study up to the Grade 11 level, and sometimes to the Grade 12 level. These requirements vary and change often so check with a counsellor or on the institution’s web site for the latest information.
Language classes at Clayton Heights Secondary give students the opportunity to learn a skill that they will have for the rest of their lives, the ability to communicate with the hundreds of millions of people in the world who speak French or Spanish, rather than English. Learning another language opens the door to other cultures, other ways of thinking and helps us understand our own culture and language better. People who possess language skills other than English may have opportunities in their lives and in their careers that would otherwise be unavailable to them.
For some, language study may end in High School, but for others interested in continuing with language learning, there are many opportunities to study or work abroad in countries where French and Spanish are spoken. See Mr. Lanfranchi for more details about these. A great opportunity for students 16 years or older is a summer work program in Quebec. For details visit www.summer-work.com.
Clayton Heights offers trips to Europe every second year. The last trip to France and Italy was in the Spring of 2009. Look for information in the spring of 2010 on the next trip to be held in 2011.
