FINE ARTS 8 (Art & Drama)

Half the semester in Art and half the semester in Drama. This is a foundation course for both Art and Drama. In Art, students will explore work in both two dimensional and three dimensional form. Students may work with pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, oil pastel, chalk pastel, tempera, and water colour paint. They may also work in clay or papier mache as time permits. This is an introductory creative Drama class for grade 8 students. No previous drama experience is required. Students in Drama 8 will learn and develop in the following areas:

MUSIC CONCERT BAND 8

Recommendation: One year’s previous band experience recommended.

Note: All students are expected to participate in all assigned performances. Open to any student with one year’s previous band experience, generally grade 8 students who have completed grade 7 band. Students will develop technical skills, range and tone production, and will learn a variety of repertoire ranging from classical to rock. Highlight of the year will be a grade 8 music retreat.

VISUAL ARTS 9: GENERAL

Recommendation: Art 8

Students will take the basic art foundations explored in Art 8, and continue to build on the basics of drawing, painting, printmaking, as well as sculpture and clay work. Students will continue to develop techniques with many different materials and mediums. Students will also be introduced to Art History in order to gain a sense of appreciation and knowledge of the historical timeline in relation to art and mankind.

VISUAL ARTS 9: CERAMIC ART

Recommendation: Art 8

This is a foundation course for all three dimensional courses offered here at Clayton Heights. All aspects of working with clay will be taught. Preparing the clay, many basic hand building techniques, pinch, slab, coil, press and drape mold are taught. Students will also be taught basic skills on the potter’s wheel. Bowl and cylinder forms will be taught. Additive and subtractive sculpture will be introduced as well. Students will participate in all aspects of glazing their work and firing the kilns.

GRAPHIC ART 9

Recommendation: Art 8

Course enhancement fees may apply.

This course has an emphasis on commercial design, packaging, lettering design and printmaking. Computer generated graphics and manipulating digital images will be introduced and explored. Students will work with a variety of materials and methods. Projects will involve drawing skills and require an open attitude to new approaches to art making.

DRAMA 9: THEATRE PERFORMANCE

This course is a creative drama class which includes some theatre skills and techniques. There is no prerequisite. Students in Drama 9 will review and build on the skills covered in Drama 8 while expanding to cover the following areas:

MUSIC 9: CONCERT BAND

Recommendation: Band 8 or Director’s Approval

Continuation of Band 8, generally for students in grade 9 with two years experience. Public and national performances and travel are aspects of this course.

VISUAL ARTS 10: GENERAL

Recommendation: Art 8 or Art 9

Course enhancement fees may apply.

Students will now be working towards improving the basics that they have mastered in Art 9. More advanced techniques will be taught within the drawing, painting, printmaking and three dimensional areas of expression New mediums and techniques will be introduced. Students in Art 10 will learn to paint with acrylics, further develop their water colour skills; and try their hand at multi colour lino block printing, silk-screening, and mono printing. They will be introduced to the potter’s wheel and continue with many hand building techniques in exploring the medium of clay. Students will also become familiar with the great masters in art history in order to develop an appreciation of style, technique and skill.

VISUAL ARTS 10: CERAMICS AND SCULPTURE

Recommendation: Ceramic & Sculpture 9 (would be helpful)

Students will continue to build on the foundation skills learned in Ceramics & Sculpture 9. More advanced forms will be taught on the potter’s wheel, the addition of handles and lids will be introduced as well. Students will be encouraged to explore their creative ideas in sculpture. The 3D 10’s will also learn how to carve soapstone. All aspects of the clay medium will continued to be explored, glaze making and firing the kilns will become additional skills taught. Students will be encourage to develop their interest within the description of this class.

VISUAL ARTS 10: PHOTOGRAPHY

Recommendation: Art 9 or Graphic Arts 9

This course is for those students who want to learn about art through the medium of photography. Students will learn about the fundamental concepts of photography by constructing a basic camera, using enlargers and manual SLR cameras, and exploring digital imagery from scanners, cameras and internet images and use photo manipulation programs such as Photoshop. Students will learn how to develop their own personal imagery and creativity. Students will start to develop an historical view of photography by exploring many famous photographers who have influenced the field and society through their work.

YEARBOOK 10:
BAA Course

This course has been developed to support and encourage students to explore the richness and diversity of events in their school environment. Students learn to plan, market, and execute the means to produce a yearbook for the student body. Students learn to use digital cameras and develop photographic skills. They develop layout skills and create page layouts. The learning outcomes are based on the organizers: Social and Cultural Issues, Creation, Analysis and Technology and Marketing. Students are given the opportunity for self and advisor assessment. The course focus is on skill development in collecting, interpreting and presenting school events. Students who take this course may register directly into Yearbook 12.

VISUAL ARTS 10: DRAWING AND PAINTING

This course is designed for those students who have become interested in developing their skills with various drawing and painting mediums: charcoal, graphite, water-soluble crayons, conte crayons, oil pastel, Tempera and Watercolour. Students will continue to develop their basic skills. Art students will use real, pictures and imagination in creating their art works. Students will be encouraged to use their creative ideas. A historical view of many famous artists who worked within the two dimensional realm will be introduced.

ART FOUNDATIONS 11

Recommendation: Art 10 or Drawing & Painting 10

This s a course for those students who have taken previous art courses and are familiar with many of the mediums and techniques. The emphasis here is on developing personal imagery and developing ones own style. This course should be considered by students wishing to pursue a career in any arts related field. Students will work with two dimensional and three dimensional mediums. Students will be encouraged to develop themes in their works and to develop creative imagery and self expression. Students will continue to learn about famous artists in a historical context.

STUDIO ARTS 11: DRAWING & PAINTING

Recommendation: Any Art 9 or Art 10 course

Course enhancement fees may apply.

This course is designed for those Grade 11’s who have become confident in handling many of the drawing and painting media and techniques. An airbrush unit will be explored. An emphasis will be on developing personal imagery and creative expression will be encouraged.

STUDIO ARTS 11: CERAMICS & SCULPTURE

Recommendation: Ceramics & Scuplture 9 or 10

This course is designed for grade 11 or 12’s who wish to continue to develop their skills with the following drawing and painting mediums: graphite, coloured pencils, conte crayon, water-soluble crayons and pencils, oil pastel, chalk pastel, pen, inks, tempera, watercolours, acrylic and oil paints. Students will further develop their skills and techniques to become confident in pursuing their imagery; while working from real life settings, imagination and photographs. Personal creativity is encouraged. Students will become familiar with great Canadian Painters, Art History, and many Master works.

ART CAREERS 11

Recommendation: 73% or better in Art 10 or 11

If you want to pursue a career in the arts, then this is a must take course! The primary goal of this course is to create a portfolio that will meet the criteria of post secondary colleges and art programs. Students will be self-directed with support, encouragement and guidance from the instructor. Students will be encouraged to attend the National Portfolio Day at Emily Carr College of Art and Design. They will also be expected to do some research on potential colleges, institutes and careers of interest.

MEDIA ARTS 11 (PHOTOGRAPHY)

Recommendation: Graphic Art 9/10

Course enhancement fees may apply.

Students will work with 35 mm manual cameras, and digital cameras and images. The course covers black and white photography starting with an overview of the basics of shooting, processing film, and developing prints. Photoshop will be taught in order to manipulate digital images. Students are taught the elements and principles of design as applied to photography and are encouraged to explore their own interests when researching a photographer and shooting their images. Critique is a component developed in this course.

YEARBOOK 11
BAA Course

Recommendation: Must have the instructor’s permission. By interview only.

Students will be totally responsible for the production of the yearbook. Students should have a C+ or better in their English courses. A basic understanding of computers and software is a must as this course requires use of computers for layout, file organization and photo manipulation. Art and photography experience is an asset. Students must be willing to work as a team and be willing to put in extra hours outside of class time. Deadlines are a critical reality of this class. A mature attitude and good work ethic are a must.

ART FOUNDATIONS 12

Recommendation: Art 11 or Drawing & Painting 11

This course is designed again to support those who are considering a career in an arts related field. Students will be encouraged to further explore their creative expression in the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking and three dimensional art. Students will have frequent opportunities to explore areas of visual expression. Students will learn to critique their works, using the elements and principles of design as a basis of discussion. A comprehensive portfolio will be developed with additions from their Art 11 year. Students will continue to explore and appreciate the works of many famous artists in a historical context.

STUDIO ARTS 12: DRAWING & PAINTING

Recommendation: Drawing & Painting 11 or Art 11

This course is designed for those Grade 12’s who will continue to develop their skills with the following drawing and painting mediums: graphite coloured pencils, conte crayon, water-soluble crayons and pencils, oil pastel, chalk pastel, pen, ink, Tempera, Watercolours, Acrylic and Oil paints. Students will be encouraged to work large, take on a mural project or large scale canvas. Mixed media projects will be encouraged. Students will continue to develop and refine their techniques to become confident in pursuing their imagery. Art students will work form life settings, imagination and photographs. Personal creativity and theme development is strongly encouraged. Student will continue to refine their portfolios and develop a photographic archive for their works. Students will continue to study and explore Art History and Master works.

STUDIO ARTS 12: CERAMIC & SCULPTURE

Recommendation: Ceramics & Sculpture 11

Students should have many basic wheel and hand building skills, therefore they will be encouraged to take an individual course of study and explore areas of interest. They will take on a leadership roll in the class, and play a bigger part in the firing of the kilns and glaze development. This is a must take course if further 3D studies at the College level are being considered.

ART CAREERS 12

Recommendation: Art Careers 11

Course enhancement fees may apply. Students will continue to develop their portfolios. They will be encouraged to apply to post-secondary institutes to further their education in art. Students will be selfdirected with support, encouragement and guidance from the instructor. Students will be encouraged to attend the National Portfolio Day at Emily Carr College of Art and Design. Students will be encouraged to try for many scholarships and learn how to present themselves and their portfolios to their best advantage.

MEDIA ARTS 12 (Photography)

Recommendation: Media Arts 11 (Photography)

This course expands on the student’s prior photographic knowledge and skills. Emphasis is placed on photography as an art form that expresses ideas. Awareness of social and personal issues, and a professional approach to work are the main focuses of this course. Photoshop will be used in conjunction with black and white photography to produce a body of work around the student's interests. Students will be required to show their work and develop a “portfolio” of their work and ideas. Research and critique are required components of this course.

YEARBOOK 12
BAA Course

Recommendation: Must have the instructor’s permission in an interview process and have taken Yearbook 11 or have equivalent experience and skills.

Students will be given a leadership role in the production of the yearbook and will be required to train and supervise grade 11 students in their page production. Management, leadership and production skills will be taught and evaluated. Art, computer, writing and photography experience is absolutely necessary. Students must be willing to act as team leaders and be willing to put in extra hours outside of class time. Students will make sure the students in their team meet the production deadlines. This course will be of interest to students who wish to pursue careers in related field.

DRAMA 10: THEATRE PERFORMANCE

This course includes both creative drama and theatre skills. Drama 9 is not a prerequisite, although some previous experience is desirable. Students in Drama 10 will continue to build on skills in Drama 8 and 9 while covering the following areas:

This is a course in advanced theatre skills. The major emphasis will be on applying acting skills to a variety of performance pieces.

THEATRE PRODUCTION 11 OR THEATRE PRODUCTION, DIRECTING & SCRIPTWRITING TP 11 OR TPDS 11

This course uses drama skills to appreciate and critique various genres of drama as well as engage in the creative process to create theatrical works. Attending live theatre performances is a requirement of the course therefore, parents and/or guardians will be responsible for transportation costs and tickets. Final project will be to create a script for performance. Pervious drama experience is recommended but not a requirement. This course is offered outside the regular school schedule as an X block in the afternoons.

THEATRE COMPANY 12—X2 BLOCK

Course enhancement fees may apply. This course is run in conjunction with Theatre Company 11. It gives the senior student an opportunity to refine skills and take a leadership role in the production of the play.

Open to students who have completed Band 9. Students will learn a variety of extensive repertoire, and will develop skills at a senior level. This is one of the premier ensembles of the school which may be expected to play at national festivals and possible tours to destinations outside of Surrey.

Recommendation: Any level Concert Band 8, 9, 10, 11 or Director’s approval. It is recommended that the student be enrolled in a Concert Band as well.
