ENGLISH 8
Recommendation: n/a
Through the integration of reading, writing, oral communication, viewing and representing, all of the English courses are designed to develop students’ skills and appreciation of literature and language. The activities and resources are selected to appeal to a range of interests and abilities. This course is an introduction to high school English designed to introduce a variety of genres to the students. In the classroom, the students will be exposed to a variety of units including short stories, novels, poetry, drama, mythology, non-fiction, writing and speaking. At the conclusion of the semester, the students will have a final project which will represent all of these areas. The final is worth 15% of the students’ overall mark.
ENGLISH 9
Recommendation: English 8
Through the integration of reading, writing, oral communication, viewing and representing, all of the English courses are designed to develop students’ skills and appreciation of literature and language. The activities and resources are selected to appeal to a range of interests and abilities. This course is designed to take the basic skills as learned in grade 8 and develop them further. The students must demonstrate an interpretive understanding of each of the following genres: poetry, novels, short stories, drama (introduction to Shakespeare) and nonfiction. Composition skills needed for a variety of formats will be emphasized. At the conclusion of the semester, the students will complete a final evaluation worth 15-20% of their overall mark.
ENGLISH 10
Provincial Exam
Recommendation: English 9
This course takes the skills learned in grade 8 and developed in grade 9 to a higher academic level. While the students are studying the genres of poetry, drama, novels, short stories, and speaking, more emphasis is placed on their ability to analyze these works through writing. At the conclusion of the semester the students will write a provincial exam worth 20% of their overall grade. This course will also be the foundation of the decision whether the student will continue on into English 11 or Communications 11.
ENGLISH 11
Recommendation: English 10
This course is designed for those students who enjoy and excel in English. It requires students to look in depth into literature, to analyze literary techniques and to provide insight into character, setting, conflict and many other elements. The genres of this course are novels, short stories, poetry, drama (Shakespeare play) and non-fiction. Students will write in a variety of formats employing all stages of the writing process. At the end of the semester, a final exam of 30% must be completed in order for the students to move to the next level. This course is necessary in order for students to move into English 12.
COMMUNICATIONS 11
Recommendation: English 10
Communications 11, an alternative to English 11 is designed for students not proceeding directly to university. Like English 11, it integrates the skills of reading, writing, oral communication, viewing and representing. It is intended to develop and enhance students’ appreciation of literature and language. Students will be evaluated on their growth over the semester and their final grade will be determined through an assessment of their writing portfolio.
ENGLISH 12
Provincial Exam
Recommendation: English 11
English 12 is a mandatory course which all students, except those in Communications 12, must pass in order to graduate. English 12 draws together the learning experiences of 12 years of schooling. It encourages the development of students’ confidence, independence and appreciation in the areas of reading, writing, oral communication, viewing and representing. It continues to develop and enhance students’ appreciation of literature and language. The activities and resources are increasingly more sophisticated, but are carefully selected to appeal to the range of students’ interests and abilities.
- Students will read for a variety of purposes, demonstrate interpretive understanding, and critically analyze short stories, novels, poetry, drama, e.g., Shakespeare play, and non-fiction.
- In writing, students will write in a variety of formats employing all stages of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, editing, proofreading and publishing. Emphasis will be on multi-paragraph composition.
- Oral communication skills will develop a critical awareness and appreciation of audience, purpose and context.
- In viewing, students will identify, analyze, interpret, and evaluate techniques used to convey meaning in visual and mass media.
- Students select and create a variety of representational forms to assist in the expression, development and extension of ideas.
- Students write a government examination for this course. 60% of the final grade is determined by the mark achieved during the term and 40% by the government exam.
COMMUNICATIONS 12

Like English 12, it integrates the skills of reading, writing, oral communication, viewing and representing. It is intended to develop and enhance students’ appreciation of literature and language. The activities and resources are carefully selected to appeal to the range of students’ interests and abilities. Students will read for a variety of purposes and demonstrate understanding of short stories, novels, poetry, drama and non-fiction.

ENGLISH LITERATURE 12

Note: It is recommended that students have a standing of “C+” or better in English 11 and English 12.
This course is a survey of English literature from Anglo Saxon to modern times with representative works studied from each historical period. This is an academic course that strong English students will enjoy and find the basis for life-long enrichment and learning. There is an optional Provincial Exam worth 40% of the final mark.
