WHAT TEACHERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT:

PREGNANCY/PARENTAL LEAVE (ARTICLE G21.4.e)

This information reflects the changes to the Employment Standards Act.  Parental leave has been increased and may be taken by either the mother or father, or shared between them.

ENTITLEMENT:

PAID ENTITLEMENT :

Birth Mothers

  • 2 weeks Supplemental Plan – 95% of Current Wages – Article G21.4.i.ii
  • 15 weeks Pregnancy Leave – E.I. + Top Up to 70% of Current Wages – Article G21.4.i.ii
  • 37 weeks Parental Leave – E.I. only (without pay from the District)

        52 Weeks Total

  **Birth Fathers or Adoptive Parents

  • 2 weeks Supplemental Plan – E.I. (if eligible) + Top Up to 95% of Current Wages – Article G21.4.i.i                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             
  • 15 weeks Parental Leave – E.I. + Top Up to 70% of Current Wages – Article G21.4.iii
  • 20 weeks Parental Leave – E.I. only (without pay from the District)

 **Note:  Birth Mothers are eligible if they are not taking Pregnancy Leave.

THE PROCESS:

  • Fill out a Leave of Absence Request and attach a Physician’s note advising of due date, or a copy of the birth certificate or adoption papers.  When completed, have your Principal sign request and remit to Human Resources Department, Courier #481.

  • Approximately two (2) days prior to your leave, call the Payroll Department to request a Record of Employment for E.I.  You will also need to arrange with the Payroll Department the continuation (if applicable) of your benefits.

  • To receive the two (2) week supplemental plan as per Article G21.4.i.ii (95% of two weeks pay, based on your annual salary) AND

  • To determine your top up (if eligible), per Article G21.4.i.iii, remit a copy of "My Current Claim Information," which you will have received once you have registered on-line for EI benefits, to the Payroll Department.  The top up is paid twice monthly on the regular payroll run.

Please Note: For purposes of eligibility for top-up, you will not be considered to be on parental leave if you are doing any paid work for the District.

OTHER INFORMATION:

Parental Leave        - available to both parents (one or the other) upon the birth or adoption of a child.  A parent for this purpose, will include any person with whom a child is placed for adoption, as well as any person who is in a relationship of some permanence with a parent of a child and who intends to treat the child as his or her own.

Supplemental Employment Benefits to Teachers

Step 1  Apply online @ www.hrdc.gc.ca for your EI maternity/parental benefits.

Step 2  In order to receive payment of your 2 week waiting period and 15 week top up you must provide payroll with a copy of "My Current Claim Information" which is available from EI upon acceptance of your claim including:

  • start date of claim

  • waiting period

  • type of benefit

  • benefit rate

ARTICLE G21.4.i.ii - 2 week waiting period (annual salary divided by 52 weeks x 95%)

ARTICLE G21.4.i.iii - 15 week waiting period (annual salary divided by 52 weeks x 70% - weekly EI payment)
