Language Assistant

NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK

 

A Language Assistant assists teaching staff with the delivery of language programs, working with students in classrooms and reinforcing teachers' lessons in either official language. This may involve English and another designated language and, in French Immersion programs, communicating solely in French or in a combination of French and English.

 

The work generally involves assisting with learning activities, and the preparation and setting out of materials, supplies and equipment. The work may involve communication with families, agencies and other personnel in a liaison role, under the direction of the classroom teacher.

 

An employee in this classification may assist teachers by supervising students in a small group and providing conversational opportunities to improve language comprehension and skills. A Language Assistant may correct student work in the context of communicative activities, language practice, etc.

 

Work may include translating information, and assisting teachers with the selection of books for classroom use. The work of a Language Assistant may take place in several classrooms and/or locations in the course of a day.

 

Employees in this classification may work without direct supervision. A Language Assistant reports to a school administrative officer, but receives day-to-day direction from the classroom teacher.

 

 

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Assists teachers in the classroom by emphasizing designated aspects of lessons and explaining basic content.

 

May monitor small groups and conduct conversations, drills, exercises and other language-related activities in either official language or another designated language to improve students' pronunciation, vocabulary and language skills. This includes correcting students' errors in communicative activities.

                                    

 Provides students with information and experiences relating to the culture of the language.

 

Selects suitable books for classroom use based on teachers' instructions, and provides assistance to teachers with library and media materials.

 

Prepares classroom materials such as copies, flashcards, etc. and sets out equipment in the classroom.

 

May assist the teacher in meetings with parents, families and outside agencies by providing translation services.

 

Assists teachers in the assessment of ESL students.

 

Accompanies and may monitor groups of students on field trips and/or other acculturation experiences.

 

May assist Librarian in taking inventory and cataloguing/classifying foreign language print and non-print materials.

 

Performs related duties, as required.

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Fluency in English both oral and written and another designated language.

 

Ability to follow direction and to work in cooperation with classroom teachers.

 

Interpersonal and communication skills.

 

An understanding of the relevant course material.

 

Ability to relate to, develop a rapport and work with students effectively.

     

   

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

 

Completion of grade 12, or equivalent acquired in the required language, including fluency in English.

 

One years previous related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Valid B.C. Driver's Licence.
