We’re deep into the second semester and nearly completed the course selection process for next year. Students will have an opportunity to verify their courses for 2011/12 in late May should any modifications be necessary and plan for the coming year. The process of verification is used by administration to determine staffing requirements. As Queen Elizabeth is currently projected to increase by approximately 20 students next year (for a total enrolment of 1490), it is very important that we have a solid understanding of course requirements.

Grade 12 students are busy making plans for post graduation now and many are applying to universities, colleges and other post-secondary programs. Any students seeking additional information about options or particular programs should contact our Counselling and Career Department.

As part of the requirements for Grad Transitions, Grade 12 students participated in Exit Interviews on April 19th and 20th. Please note these are mandatory interviews and failure to complete them will mean loss of eligibility to graduate in June. For further information regarding student completion, please contact the Grad Transition Co-ordinator, Ms. Beck.

Our first formal report cards of the 2nd semester were issued on Thursday, April 7th and   Parent/Teacher Interviews were held on Thursday, April 14th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the large gymnasium. We suggest that you take time to carefully review the results of this report and make special effort to focus on those areas requiring greater emphasis and improvement as we finish up the semester.

As well, I encourage Grade 10 students that are experiencing any challenges with Science, English or Math to take advantage of the Exam Preparation Tutorials that will begin in late May.

The Queen Elizabeth Community experienced yet another fantastically successful “Roots & Rhythm”. This annual event took place on Wednesday, April 13th and drew a large appreciative audience to celebrate an evening of entertainment. This year’s production was inspiring as it demonstrated what a great multi-cultural school we have.

This event has become one of the defining moments of the school year as it celebrates the cultural diversity of our school community. Proceeds from the evening were donated (over $5000) to the Surrey Memorial Hospital. Congratulations to the sponsor teachers and student committee members for their time and effort.

And last, but not least, I want to acknowledge the hard work that the Dry Grad Committee is doing for the Class of 2011. This dedicated group has been working hard to create a positive, safe and enjoyable Dry Grad event for this year’s Grade 12’s. I have been involved in many of these events over the years, and to make it a great success requires everyone’s support and help. Anything that you can do to help and support this committee would be greatly appreciated, please contact the school administration to volunteer.

I wish everyone the best as we enter this final quarter of the school year.
