PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
General Meeting June 6, 2007 at 7:05pm.

1. Welcome/Introductions: Steve Schnitzer, Susan Schnitzer, Susan Caley, Linda Blais, Ken Hignell, Mark Adams, Christa Koziminski, Murali Krishnan in attendance.

a. Steve introduced Agenda: Linda added under “New Business” Teachers Appreciation Lunch. Ken Hignell also added a topic about Traffic in front of the school. Steve introduced minutes from last meeting – Motion to adopt was made by L.Blais and seconded by Susan Schnitzer – all in favour

2. Principals Report:
Ken Hignell covered the highlights of events since the last meeting which were:
Elementary School Leadership students from the feeder schools toured Johnston Heights
Mock Interviews with Grade 10 students. Approximately 200 students participated and were interviewed by people from the community
Third annual AIM Games (Special Olympics) – JHHS sent a Team
Super G Movie day approximately 44% of students were eligible up from 38% from 2005/06. There were two full theatres of students this term
In May JHHS had Multi-cultural week which presented dances, special performances, presentations and menus from the community and students
May also saw Round 2 of hiring. JHHS is to get six new teachers next year for social studies, math, and planning ed etc. There should be a few positions available in Round 3
Junior Achievement occurred in May. Members of the community gave presentations of a real working environment French Dept brought in a French Chef who put on a culinary presentation
Entrepreneur Club did a movie presentation which was unfortunately not well attended.
Grade 8 evening for new 2006/2007 parents
School superintendent visited in May and meeting focused on Grade 8 school year eg. Students at risk
Grade 12 assembly held and information was presented on Grad and year end classes
Code Red drill held which involved lock down and evacuation of students. Evacuation was done in 4 minutes. Few issues one of which is how students come back into school and the retaining wall outside
Mr. Mandole’s Calculus AP Class was very successful. As a result will be increasing number of classes next year – 2 Calculus and 2 regular AP classes but only for Grade 12 students. Hope to offer English Lit AP class but Ms. Singer on maternity leave. Computer Science AP class will be grouped with regular computer science class. Plan to offer more AP classes in the future.
Held Grade 7 parent night in Gym. Approximately 175 people attended. Leadership and ESL Students provided tours of the school. Coffee and dessert were offered later
Grade 7 indoor track meet was held at JHHS for feeder schools. Leadership students provided tours for students
Honour Roll for mid term saw 54% of students on honour roll up from 48% from last year
Mentioned Christabel and Sabrina Netty and their achievements at the track meet. Also mentioned Chelsey Pratt for her writing and speech achievements
Future events: Sports banquet, Awards banquet, Grad and Dry Grad event
Vending Machines in school almost have no Pop. New trend will be water and juice only. Snack Vending Machines are no longer being offered due to constant vandalism
Grade 8 survey report – questions involved items from School Plan:
1) Do you feel safe at school – 11% No in 05/06 school year and 9% No in 06/07
2) Three things like/dislike about school – Like: Food, Teachers and Activities. Dislike: No more junk food in vending machines, lineups for things, small cafeteria and crowded hallways
Commencement tickets – are there anymore? Speak to Mr. Raycroft

3. Financial Report:
Linda Blais presented school year end report. Report represents transactions to the end of May – see attached
Motion made by Linda to transfer $1,823.92 from General Account to Gaming account due to money being used out of Gaming account instead of General Account. M.Adams seconded – all in favour. Letter explaining reasons for transfer has been prepared and signed by S.Schnitzer to answer any questions
Motivational Speaker program – possibly hold $626.00 until September for Speaker. Etiquette speaker cost $250.00
Special Projects – Large White screen for gym (not purchased yet). K.Hignell will place order. Upgrade/Repair Trophies at a cost of approximately $2000
Linda will report balance of Gaming funds in September after all expenses go through
Linda asked for money for a computer program to assist in spread sheets and reports for treasury position. Mark Adams made a motion to allow budget of $250.00 for program. M.Krishnan seconded it – all in favour
Reviewed general account – see attached. A bit of money will be left over for 2007/08 year
2007/08 proposed PAC Budget was presented by Linda. Linda Blais made a motion to adopt budget. M.Adams seconded – all in favour
Linda Blais made a motion to deposit $300.00 which was found money from seniors breakfast which did not happen and PAC donated money for. M.Krishnan seconded – all in favour
Linda Blais made a motion to adopt financial report. Susan Schnitzer seconded – all in favour

4. DPAC Report:
Mark Adams presented DPAC report.
DPAC had another eventful year
Attendance at meetings going up
They had good speakers this year
Registration going up with Schools
DPAC has some interesting programs happening for next year
District level is lacking in Volunteers
Had discussion on lack of volunteers at school level. Steve Schnitzer suggested spending up to $200 for first PAC meeting of the year on food to encourage people to come. This would create a more social atmosphere for the first meeting. It was agreed that this was a good idea to pursue.

5. Dance Report:
Christa Koziminski had nothing to report since no dances were held since last meeting

6. Fundraising Report:
No fundraising report as Emma Dyck not in attendance

7. School Planning Council:
Working on more collaborative time
Expending homework club
100 Japan Students for next school year
10 students from JHHS to Travel to Japan with Mr. Evans, Vice Principal in early July, 2007

8. Dry Grad Committee:
Susan Schnitzer gave report
Ticket sales slow only 54 sold so far
Number of graduating students – 241
Will be selling tickets again on Monday/Tuesday

9. Student Council Report:

No nominations for Treasurer. Pursuant to Section 8.2 of the By-laws Linda Blais cannot run as Treasurer as she has been in the position for three years. Seeing that there were no nominees for Treasurer, Steve Schnitzer made a motion to “appoint” Linda Blais as Treasurer for the next 12-months. M.Adams seconded it – all in favour

11. New business:
PAC meetings for 2007/08 dates – September 12, October 3, November 7, December 5, January 9, February 6, March 5, April 2, May 7, June 4
Library Funding request: $500 for library club, $2,500 to promote literacy (buying books), $1,453.38 – 2 digital cameras and accessories
Approved $500 for library club (in budget). Rest will be deferred to September 2007 meeting
Emma Dyck (absent) has agreed to do the Teachers Appreciation breakfast ($300 budget)
Ken Hignell brought up traffic issues in front of school Kingston Gardens (Apartments across the street) have approached them about supporting their proposal to place speed bumps up 99th Street. Proposal is made to the city. Discussed sending a letter to the City supporting this proposal from JHHS and possibly the PAC

12. Executive Reports:
President, Steve Schnitzer wished time to do more as more could be done. Provided thoughts on how to get more parents involved eg. Food
Vice President, Susan Caley also provided thoughts on how to get more parents involved
Treasurer, Linda Blais said thank you for our (Steve Schnitzer and Susan Caley) involvement. PAC has been left in good financial standing. Says goodbye and presents Steve Schnitzer with a card.
Ken Hignell also thanked Steve for all his time and effort
