3. Principals Report:
a. Johnston Heights received a “Thank you” letter from the Japanese group that had visited last month. They were grateful for the hospitality shown and the exposure they received to the Canadian way of life. The Japanese have invited JH to send an exchange group of students to Japan. Mr. Hignell exploring the possibility of exchange students and reiterated the need to foster these relationships because it is an all out “win win” outcome for everyone. Linda, informed him that the gaming funds will not be able to cover such an expense. Darlene asked Mr. Hignell what the criteria would be for his choice of students and he made it clear that the leadership students will be his obvious choice since they put in a lot of effort when the Japanese group visited.

Another “Multicultural Celebration” was slated for next spring.
Several student success stories figured in Mr Hignell “highlights”
At the National Technology week, Jessica Quach of Grade 9 took 2nd Place. She won an IPOD and $500/- RESP plus national recognition for her work
Chelsea Cunha of Grade 10 was featured in “Chef’s Newsletter”
Aaron Raymond and Aaron Bains attended the Surrey Model United Nations 2006 held early December and both came home with awards – Best Speaker and Best Delegate. Mr. Hignell to consider helping them to attend the next United Nations Based symposium to be held in Vancouver in January ‘07
Danny Sveinson the guitar virtuoso was featured in a CBC show that aired last week. Danny also performed at the benefit concert for Michael Levi
After the Michael Levi attack JH reviewed protocols and threat assessments
ICBC speaker Heather Charlton spoke on “Drinking and Driving”
A new committee formed for developing readers
“Drugs in the community” was an informational evening for Parents

PAC funding allowed the Justice Theatre to present their drama on “Cyber Bullying”
The Japanese TV crew did a feature on JH and that will be broadcast to their viewers
The school Dance was attended by 350 students and went off well
“Annual School Review” by the superintendent’s office was very informative
JH hosted a team of Chinese Teachers for a month to study the working of BC’s student-centered curriculum
OPTIONS has approved practicum students working with the JH program
A water pipe burst and the fire alarm went off on Nov 30. However, with the systems developed around school evacuations everything went off well

4. Financial Report:

Linda waiting for “Wish List” items to be disclosed before PAC can decide on funding them

5. Committee Reports:
a. DPAC representative Mark Adams, gave Ken Hignell information on FORCE. Surrey DPAC is looking for parent input and help to revise their Parent Handbook. Handbook scheduled to be in print by the end of the school year. All parents encouraged to send in their submissions
b. Dance Committee: PAC help at the dance much appreciated. 350 students attended
c. Fund Raising Committee: Emma away. Will report next month
d. Progressive Fundraising: It was reported that Emma is doing well with the store certificates. Made $65.42 to date
e. School Planning Council: Darlene Taylor attended the meeting and it turned out to be a very informative session. She highly recommends attending these sessions.
f. Dry Grad Committee: Susan Schnitzer did not attend. Susan Caley informed us that the Silent Auction planned had to be postponed due to lack of items for the auction. She urged support from more parents and students. Cindy Reber suggested we have Grade 11 students join the Dry Grad committee so that planning in their final year will prove easier. A meeting for Grade 11 and 12 students was proposed. The DVD of last year’s Dry Grad event would be screened
g. Student Council Report: Aaron Raymond and Aaron Bains represented the council. They are organizing a dance instruction class for the Grade 12s. Student council has managed to find an instructor who is willing to do three “dance lesson” sessions at a very minimal fee of $80/- each
A formal dance is then lined up for sometime in mid to late January 2007 (Jan 16-18) when the students can try out their newly-learned dance steps. Student Council requested PAC for between $500 and $700/- to help put the event together. They have worked out the cost for the event which includes the music, decorations, food, etc. However, Mr. Hignell interjected saying that the planning was in its infancy and would like to first have a budget and other factors arranged. He stated that it was only a proposal and that safety precautions, food safe regulations, copyright laws, etc have to be discussed first. Maybe the event could be postponed to February 2007. Since the plan was to have a winter theme, it will still work
Linda acknowledged that PAC would definitely consider student council’s request. If necessary, the executive PAC committee is willing to meet to discuss the event once Mr. Hignell gives the “go-ahead”.
