PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
Minutes of February 1st., 2006 PAC at Johnston Heights School 7:00pm.
1. Welcome
Approximately 25 people in attendance
PAC president John Holt welcomed the group. John gave a brief introduction of the executive council to the parents and guests. The regular order of business was suspended to allow for a presentation from Languages Dept Head, Luce Arsenault and Tracy Hardman, Substance Use Liaison, District 36.

2. The presentation by the Languages department teachers was regarding the proposed cultural exchange trip between the students of B.C and Quebec. The program is coordinated through the services of SEVEC and Exchanges Canada. This is the first time that JHSS has been selected by the project. A group of about 20 students from each province will be staying at sponsors’ homes during their stay. Teachers at JHSS have proposed that the Quebec students will be taken to Victoria, Whistler and Vancouver during their one-week stay here in B.C. The cost for all the activities is under funded by an estimated at $2,500.00, most of which would be transportation fees. The group would be grateful for any contribution the PAC would make to support this cultural exchange.

3. Tracy Hardman, Substance Abuse Liaison Officer, from the School District 36 gave a 1.75 hour presentation on drug awareness. The presentation touched on the various drugs available in the market, the short and long term effects of the drugs, the impact it has on the students, parents and the community. The presentation was followed by question and answer session. Ms. Hardman is in the school on Fridays if you have any more questions or concerns

After a brief break, the regular PAC meeting resumed with 12 people in attendance

7. Old Business - None

8. New Business
The PAC members supported the idea of contributing towards the proposed cultural exchange program between the students from B.C. and Quebec. Linda proposed a motion to contribute $500.00 towards the proposed cultural exchange program. Murali seconded the motion. After some discussion, John moved to increase our support to $1000 seconded by Brenda. The amendment and original motions were passed.

Mr. H. Becker raised concerns regarding traffic congestion at the intersection of 154th Street and 100 Ave. His concern was for the safety of students and parents from both JHSS and William Davidson Elementary School. Everyone in attendance was familiar with the unusual design of the intersection and most had experienced some sort of conflict or concerns there. Dianne suggested that PAC should get involved in this issue and send a letter to the City of Surrey. John Holt asked that Mr. Becker draft a letter regarding this issue and submit the same to the PAC. PAC will discuss this matter, make any amendments to the letter if necessary and submit the letter to the City of Surrey with a copy to the PAC from William Davidson Elementary School.

Emma gave a brief report on one of the incidents that happened at the North Surrey Secondary School during a grade 8 girls basketball game. It seems there was no proper coach at the game to represent JHSS. Mr. Hignell promised to look into it and report at the next PAC meeting.

Meeting ended at 10:05pm.
Next General Meeting: 1st. March 2006
