ART

The JH Art Department continues to expand the knowledge and skill base of its many creative students. There is an abundance of amazingly creative students here at JH and any interested student of art is welcome to take any of the variety of art courses offered and gain experience in drawing, painting, printmaking, clay hand building and pottery wheel experience.

Depending on the course name and time, other three dimensional media such as papier mache, cardboard & craftstick construction, folk art furniture painting and two dimensional mural conception and design are presented as possible teaching units.

All JH students may stop by and check the Art Bulletin board to find out about the latest opportunities to enter various art contests throughout the year. Each year our junior and secondary art students participate in the Surrey wide Secondary School's Art show, and field trips to galleries and for sketching are also part of the program. Our senior students who wish to build portfolios for entrance to various post secondary art programs can expect input and help in just what should be included and how to go about presenting an impressive array of work.

MODERN LANGUAGES

¿Quieren practicar el espanol? Parlez-vous francais? Welcome to Johnston Heights Modern Languages Department. This very dynamic department offers two exciting programmes. "Passages/Voyages" is currently used for French and "Dime Uno/Dos" is being used for Spanish. Students use the language daily, not just to practice reading and writing, but to speak to one another! We are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to have pen pals in countries where these languages are spoken. Are YOU interested?

Every second year, depending on the interests of the students, our department offers a trip to Quebec, Mexico or Spain. These trips are organized so that the students can experience the language and culture they are studying first hand.

Why study a foreign language?

  • Fulfill university's entrance requirements
  • Function and compete effectively in the global economy of today and the future
  • Increase job opportunities
  • Develop intercultural sensitivity, increasing global understanding
  • Improve critical and creative thinking skills
  • Enhance travel and study abroad opportunities
  • Increase understanding of people in your own country
