The first Surrey school opened in 1882. The Surrey School District was formed in 1906.

The district serves the City of Surrey, the City of White Rock and the rural area of Barnston Island. According to Stats Canada Census 2006 the total area served is approximately 328 square kilometers with a total area population of 413,886.

The district also runs a distributed learning program (Surrey Connect) and a variety of satellite and inter-agency programs.

All New Secondary Schools: Of 19 secondary schools in the district, 13 were built and the remaining schools substantially renovated in the last 18 years.

Twenty New Elementary Schools: There have been 20 brand new elementary schools built in the Surrey School District over the last 14 years. In addition, 53 elementary schools had new additions constructed.

K-12 enrolment increased by 1,101 since September 2008
Elementary Students: 38,136 in elementary schools and Surrey Connect
Secondary Students: 28,481 in secondary schools, five student learning centres and Surrey Connect
Other: 159 in a variety of district programs and services

Enrolment is expected to continue to grow at a more moderate rate: Although the City of Surrey projects a higher number of residential units in the next ten years over the previous ten year period, a greater proportion of the new residential development is projected to be higher density apartment development than the previous ten years. Enrolment will be impacted by the changing availability and affordability of family-oriented housing and demographic trends in the school district and province. In the past 10 years, school district enrolment in Surrey and White Rock has grown by 8,578 students.

Student Highlights

  • In 2008/09, students in Surrey were at or above the provincial pass rate (+/- 1%) in the five key courses requiring provincial examinations. The proportion of students with a C+ or better was also at or above the provincial rate in four of the five required courses.
  • Interest in the trades continues to grow and our programs are well-subscribed. The district had 369 students enrolled in apprenticeship programs in 2008/09.
  • Student interest in continuing with post-secondary education was 69% (2008 survey) which is 11% higher than 2005.
  • The percentage of students graduating within 6 years of entering Grade 8 in 2008/09 was 83%. This has been relatively consistent for the past 6 years. It was 77% in 2001/02. Typically more than 90% of the students who are eligible to graduate at the beginning of grade 12, did so in June.
