The Tamanawis Wildcats put the cuffs on the competition at the Surrey RCMP Classic Saturday night.
In a thrilling overtime victory, the Wildcats captured the 2012 Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic Championship with a 68-66 win over the White Rock Christian Academy Warriors.
The game was a back-and-forth match with both teams trading places in the lead, but the Wildcats prevailed with 90 seconds left in the five-minute overtime and held the score. It was the team's first championship in the tournament's 21-year history.
"This team and their coaching staff have dedicated five years and countless hours of practice to claim this victory," noted Tamanawis principal Margaux Molson, adding that both teams showed excellent sportsmanship. "It was a very proud moment for Tamanawis Secondary."
The Enver Creek Cougars captured third place in the 24-team tourney while the Princess Margaret Lions won fourth.
Manny Dulay of Tamanawis was named Most Valuable Player. The tournament's Most Inspirational Player Award went to Seye Akinsanmi of Princess Margaret Secondary, and the PM Lions were named Most Sportsmanlike Team.
