2011-12 local school calendar includes two-week spring break

At its public board meeting last night, the Surrey Board of Education approved the local calendar for the next school year.

For the third consecutive year, the board has established a local calendar that standardizes non-instructional days across the district and adds five days to the normal one-week spring break in March.

As a staff report notes, the board and staff had consulted with employee groups and the community regarding the potential for extending the spring break again for next year as a means to save costs, estimated at more than $500,000. As in previous years, there will be an increase in instructional time to make up the five days.

As result, the district’s local calendar for 2011-2012 incorporates the following extended spring break:

  • March 12 to March 23, 2012

And, the following six district-wide non-instructional days (or “Pro-D” days):

  • September 26, 2011
  • October 21, 2011
  • November 14, 2011
  • February 10, 2012
  • May 4, 2012
  • May 28, 2012

Dates such as the first day of school and statutory holidays are set by the B.C. Ministry of Education's Standard School Calendar ( PDF).
