It's official: Surrey Schools' District Education Centre is open for learning.
The Surrey Board of Education hosted the official opening of its new education facility Sept. 21. The formal event included musical performances by the Semiahmoo Secondary Student Jazz Trio, a slideshow illustrating the humble beginnings of the old administration office and the construction of the DEC, and speeches by board chairperson Laurae McNally, Supt. Mike McKay, Surrey Coun. Judy Villeneuve and Surrey Connect Grade 12 student Luisa Piraquive-Buitrago.
Staff and members of the public who couldn't attend the event were able to watch the proceedings online as it was streamed live through the district website.
Board chair Laurae McNally noted that while the building is beautiful and has many great features, "at the end of the day, it is the folks who work here who truly make this a great place to work." She also thanked the invited DEC neighbours for their patience and understanding during construction over the last two years.
McKay noted that the DEC, as an education centre, is truly a community facility.
The District Education Centre, which consolidates 27 different departments from seven different sites, is located at 14033 92nd Ave. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
