Surrey schools to receive additional classrooms to support full-day kindergarten

The B.C. government yesterday announced that under B.C.'s full-day kindergarten action plan, six Surrey schools are scheduled to receive additions and 20 schools will receive modular classrooms.

The six Surrey schools scheduled to receive additions to support full-day kindergarten include: Cambridge Elementary (four classrooms), Chimney Hill Elementary (four classrooms), Hillcrest Elementary (four classrooms), A.J. McLellan Elementary (eight classrooms), T.E. Scott Elementary (eight classrooms) and Hazelgrove Elementary (four classrooms).

The modular classrooms will provide 26 additional classrooms in the district. A committee that included educators and a representative from the Surrey school district designed the modular classrooms, which are planned to meet sustainable construction standards. The modular classrooms can be relocated or clustered as the student population changes over time. Artist renderings of proposed modular units can be found at www.bced.gov.bc.ca/news/docs/2010/modular_school.pdf .

As Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid looks on, Surrey Board of Education chair Laurae McNally addresses the news conference at A.J. McLellan elementary school.   B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell chats with kindergarten students at A.J. McLellan elementary school before announcing funding for new school classrooms to support full-day kindergarten.
