1. When and where can I register for full-day kindergarten (FDK)?
General kindergarten registration for full-day and half-day kindergarten for September 2010 begins January 18. Please note that not all schools are able to offer FDK for next year. Related links: details about FDK availability, registration requirements and school catchment areas. You may also contact your neighbourhood school for this information.
2. Why doesn’t my school offer full-day kindergarten?
As one of very few districts with growing enrolment, for September 2010, FDK classes were assigned to schools largely based on where classroom space was available, though the district also attempted to provide the program in each of the district’s regions or “family” of schools. For September 2010, the Surrey School District has been able to make full-day kindergarten available in 82 of the district’s 100 elementary schools and about 73 per cent of all kindergarten classes. However, as the ministry is phasing-in FDK over two years, not everyone can be accommodated for September 2010.
3. My neighbourhood school offers FDK, yet my child didn’t get in. Why?
In some instances, there may not be enough space for every neighbourhood student to attend an FDK at a school offering it. However, your child will be able to have a right to attend half-day kindergarten, whether available at your neighbourhood school or a school nearby.
4. Can I register for FDK at any school that offers it?
All students should register at their neighbourhood school first. If you would like your child to attend kindergarten at a different school, apply at that school as well. Your child may be able to attend another school (outside your own catchment) if space is available, by submitting an out-of-catchment application form ( PDF, 256 KB) (also available at any school) to your chosen school. Names are placed on a waiting list at the school in the order received with priority given first to applications from siblings of current students, then to “in-catchment” students, then to out-of-catchment students from within the region. Wait lists will be created and parents will be informed as soon as possible when space is confirmed.
5. What if I want my child in FDK at an out-of-catchment school, but don’t want to lose a half-day kindergarten seat at my neighbourhood school if she doesn’t get in?
All students should register at their neighbourhood school first. If you would like your child to attend kindergarten at a different school, apply at that school as well.
6. If I register my child in FDK at an out-of-catchment school, will he/she be guaranteed a seat back at my neighbourhood school for Grade 1 forward?
Your child will have priority at your own neighbourhood school after completing kindergarten at an out-of-catchment school.
7. My school only offers FDK and I prefer half-day kindergarten for my child. Can I pick him/her up at lunchtime?
Full-day kindergarten is the same as any of the other grades at school in that students are expected to remain at the school for the duration of the school day. Class time and lessons are planned around a full day of instruction; therefore student learning and progress requires full-time attendance. You may register your child at another school offering half-day kindergarten for September 2010 only; subject to available space (see question/answer 3).
