Parents and their preschoolers arrived at Martha Currie elementary on Wednesday morning to join the celebrations for the official opening of 10 StrongStart centres at the Surrey elementary schools of Martha Currie, Hjorth Road, Jessie Lee, George Greenaway, Georges Vanier, Westerman, Cedar Hills, Discovery, Panorama Park and Cindrich.
Martha Currie was the honourary celebration site for all 10 centre openings, with Surrey Board of Education vice-chair Shawn Wilson, the Surrey district’s superintendent of schools Mike McKay and director of instruction Pat Horstead joined by Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave Hayer and Surrey-Panorama MLA Stephanie Cadieux for the event.
“Our StrongStart BC centres have been wonderfully successful, not just in supporting early learning, but also in promoting parents’ involvement in their child’s education, and in strengthening our school communities,” said Surrey board of education chair Laurae McNally. “Our board strongly supports early learning and looks forward to working with the ministry and the City of Surrey to bring the StrongStart BC program and resources to every child in our district.”
“The StrongStart program allows us to begin building a partnership with parents during the critical early years,” says Martha Currie vice principal Dana Brown.
One of the first StrongStart BC programs in the province began in the Surrey district, which already had 10 centres operating before the addition of these new 10.
StrongStart BC is a free drop-in early learning program for preschool-aged children accompanied by a parent or caregiver. A qualified early childhood educator leads activities, including stories, music, and arts, to help children grow linguistically, emotionally and socially, and become comfortable in a school-like setting.
