Board declares January 14 "Right to Play Day"

The Surrey Board of Education is supporting "Right To Play Day" and encouraging schools to get involved.

Since March 2009 the Surrey School District has been an active partner and supporter of the City of Surrey’s partnership with the Right to Play initiative and thus helped implement Surrey’s 2010 Challenge for Children program in the community. The program is an opportunity to embrace the spirit of 2010 Winter Olympic Games with the ultimate goal of leaving a legacy for children.

In support of this partnership, the Board of Education passed a motion on December 10, 2009 declaring Thursday January 14, 2010 "Right to Play Day".

Through this initiative, students and families, as well as staff are encouraged to mark Right to Play Day by wearing red and providing a donation to Right To Play, as described in a poster ( PDF document - get adobe reader) being distributed to all schools.

The 2010 Challenge has reached 70,000 students in more than 130 schools and the Right to Play program has helped ignite the Olympic spirit of our youth while teaching important lessons about hope, respect, social responsibility, goal setting, leadership, teamwork and the importance of sport and keeping active.
