About 700,000 students from every province and territory in Canada sang at exactly the same time -- 10 am PST -- on Monday, May 3 and among the performers singing the song Sing! Sing! by Juno award-winning artist Serena Ryder were students from Green Timbers elementary, Kennedy Trail elementary, Lena Shaw elementary, Strawberry Hill elementary and Princess Margaret secondary.
The Surrey schools participated in a year in which a record number of 200 B.C. school choirs sang in the annual event.
"Our choir students are really excited. I don't know who is more nervous, the students or their choir teacher!" says Lena Shaw elementary principal Elisa Carlson.
Music Monday was created by the Coalition for Music Education in Canada (CMEC) in 2005 to celebrate the importance of music, especially in our schools. The nation-wide celebration highlights the importance of music education and the need to protect and enhance quality music programs for every child in Canadian schools. Music Monday is fast becoming a global phenomenon as the event is now being celebrated in Australia and across the United States.
