The minister’s itinerary was full on May 10 as she met with district partners, employee group representatives and school trustees to discuss ideas and concerns in addition to visiting schools, meeting students in unique and innovative programs, as well as announcing a seismic upgrade project.
The Minister of Education began her visit meeting with district representatives from the District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Surrey Principals’ and Vice Principals’ Association (SPVPA), Surrey Teachers Association (STA), Exempt and Professional Employees Group (EPEG) and the District Student Advisory Council.
For the remainder of the morning, she visited classrooms and spoke with students at JT Brown elementary and Semiahmoo secondary. The minister spoke with Semiahmoo students enrolled in the two-year International Baccalaureate program, a program that provides students with an opportunity to earn university course credits leading to preferred admission to university programs.
A working lunch with school trustees of the Surrey Board of Education was followed by a tour of Hall’s Prairie elementary, where MacDiarmid announced the school would receive $1.3 million in seismic upgrades . Surrey MLAs, district staff, teachers, parents and students heard how the school’s upgrades were expected to be complete by the time school begins in September.
The minister’s visit ended with a tour of Woodward Hill elementary, one of Surrey’s newest schools. Woodward was constructed with Leed Gold features and students are involved in growing tomato seeds that had been aboard the International Space Station .
