The Crescent Beach Legion has recognized 24 Elgin Park students as youth ambassadors for their work in researching local war veterans from Bosnia, Korea, Afghanistan and both world wars. Youth ambassadors are especially important, notes the Legion, as they represent “the passing of the torch of remembrance from one generation to another.”
Four of the students represented their classmates and presented the Legion with a plaque listing the names of all the local community war veterans.
The research by students is in preparation for a life-changing journey to Europe. The students and four of their teachers will converge in Amsterdam with thousands of others from Canada and around the world to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and Canada’s liberation of the Netherlands. The Dutch Royal Family will also be in attendance.
Students will march in the anniversary parade with a large quilt flag they pieced together using their hand prints and the names of local war veterans.
While in Europe, students will also travel to London, Paris and Germany visiting major cultural attractions as well as war memorial sites such as the beaches of Normandy, Vimy Ridge and the Flanders Fields Museum.
