Surrey School District 2008 graduates have been awarded 130—almost 20 per cent—of 657 provincial government scholarships through the Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) program.
Surrey students received 23 more scholarships for the 2007-08 school year than the previous year. The increasing numbers continue a three-year trend.
“Our board congratulates our students and the great work of teachers and staff in Career Education,” says Surrey school board chair Laurae McNally. “The trades provide a challenging and rewarding career choice and working with our industry partners and the provincial government, our school district has been at the forefront of trades career education.”
The SSA scholarships are provided by the Ministry of Education and the Industry Training Authority, funded through the Ministry of Economic Development.
The $1,000 scholarship is available to secondary school apprentices for sustained and exceptional work as an apprentice. The money is intended to assist the apprentice with the purchase of tools, equipment, materials or tuition needed to continue in his or her trade.
Secondary School Apprenticeship is a career program that provides students with the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship in high school while earning secondary school credits for work in the program.
It provides a smoother transition from school to work and a quicker route to certification in a trade - and to the earning power that goes with it.
