Two Surrey teachers receive 2009 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence

Sullivan Heights Secondary teacher Marc Pelech and Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary teacher Annissa Kermode were each recognized for their work in inspiring students with innovative and exemplary teaching practices and the integration of Information and Communications Technologies in the classroom.

Pelech was one of 15 teachers across Canada to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The $5,000 which comes with the recognition is shared equally between Pelech and his school.

At Sullivan Heights, Pelech teaches students in Grades 8-12 in visual arts and media and he is behind bringing student murals and art to the community for display. He has also established a comprehensive online gallery, www.youthvisions.ca, "to take student art from the little-seen walls of high school and showcase it to the public." The website is part of a strategy for breaking down barriers between youth and the community.

Kermode was one of 35 teachers across Canada to receive a Certificate of Achievement and $1,000 to be used for equipment or training to improve education.

“She stands behind her students as they prepare to move on to higher education and the working world,” read the award, “giving them the skills and resources they need.”

Award recipients are selected by parents and fellow educators from across Canada who participate in national and regional selection committees.
