Queen Elizabeth secondary school is receiving two new tennis courts and a new basketball court that doubles as a tennis court after the federal government contributed $17,000 in funding through its Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program.
The government funding tops up money raised by the Queen Elizabeth school community and a contribution from the Surrey Board of Education to allow the project to go ahead.
"In inner-city neighbourhoods, having a place to go to play sports or other physical activities is particularly valuable," says Surrey Board of Education chair Laurae McNally. "Young people need to have access to facilities that provide them a place to go and something to do; something to do that is healthy for body and spirit."
The new facility is expected to be completed this fall.
