Installation has just been completed at every school library in the Surrey school district of a total of 514 new PC-format computers.
Each of 100 elementary schools has received four new computers and all 19 secondary schools have received six new computers. In addition, 30 new computers have been provided for district administrative use. The average cost of each computer and LCD monitor package is $700 for a total cost of more than $380,000.
“Trustees are excited to be able to provide the new computers as in many instances, the machines replace aging computers that had become too slow for current software and also were incompatible with the district’s latest library management and student research software,” says Surrey Board of Education chair Laurae McNally. “Another great benefit is the energy-efficient LCD monitors replace old tube monitors, reducing the district’s ‘carbon footprint’ and energy expenses.”
The new computers include software with pre-programmed Internet links to reference online databases such as World Book, Encyclopedia of B.C. and curriculum-related learning resources for student and staff use.
Installation of the new computers began in early December last year and was completed this week by the district’s information management services department.
