Reading taken to whole new level at Holly Elementary with $160,000 literacy grant

Holly Elementary has been named a recipient of the 2009 Indigo Love of Reading Foundation grant.

The school provides literacy support for students from kindergarten to Grade 7 and its diverse student population comes from around the world.  This year, for example, Holly Elementary welcomed refugees from Burma, the Sudan and El Salvador.

To be considered for an Indigo Love of Reading Foundation grant, elementary schools must demonstrate they are a high-needs institution and show a commitment to an environment where literacy is a main focus. Holly is one of just 20 schools nation-wide to be awarded the grant.

Ninety percent of the $160,000 is to go towards the purchase of new books. The remaining ten percent is to fund special literary projects.

"It's going to make a huge difference," says principal Mary Gibbons.

The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation is a fully chartered charitable foundation whose goal is to improve the literacy and opportunity of children in high needs schools. For more information about the Foundation visit www.loveofreading.org
