Students from every one of the district's 100 elementary schools arrived at the 36th annual Barry Morley Memorial Elementary Track Meet with lungs in good working order, filling the park with cheering over six days -- June 1 to 3 and June 8 to 10.
Students participated in high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus and a range of short and middle distance foot races with the generous support of many volunteer timers and officials, and the dedication of many school staff members who devoted hours of time to organizing the multi-day event.
The spirit of the game is a large part of the meet. A sportsmanship award is presented to one school each day of the meet to ensure the spirit of friendly competition is remembered. That sentiment was obvious as each competitor, whether finishing first or last, was enthusiastically cheered by all.
The track and field competition is named after a district physical education helping teacher, Barry Morley, who was a strong proponent of daily physical education and inter-school activities. The First Annual District Track Meet was held in June 1972 with 21 schools taking part over three days after school.
Schools were divided into six categories based on student enrolment numbers, and competition took place between schools of comparable size on different days. Below are photos from June 10 when "big" schools competed.
