An imaginative group of 51 students from the Surrey and Delta school districts displayed their painstakingly created sculptures at the annual event.
Patience is the name of the game when it comes to culinary sculpture. This year the competition was opened up from only lard or special pastry shortening (SPS) to include a variety of food. But the most popular material used by students remained lard, which requires the creation of a metal or styrofoam frame and then the sculpting of the SPS around the frame.
When asked how long it took to finish their creations, Grade 12 North Surrey student Elaine Le simply responded "Oh gosh!" and shrugged.
Fellow Grade 12 North Surrey student Norman Pangnanouvong laughed.
"I couldn't say," he says. "I had to dip the nest frame in the lard and sculpt around it. For the eagles, each feather on them is individually done. My brother started counting the feathers but he lost count."
The event involved student volunteers, who helped to make the competition a success and judges that included current and retired staff along with a school trustee.
Below is a selection of the 38 exhibits.
