District basketball teams head to provincial championships

Grade 8 and Grade 9
The Enver Creek Cougars conquered all competitors to win the Grade 8 boys basketball tournament in Langley, winning a spot at their grade’s provincial championships. They beat their Surrey rivals, the Elgin Park Orcas, by 20 points in the final game of the tournament. Score at the end of the game was 59-39.

The Tamanawis Wildcats placed second at the Grade 9 boys’ tournament, gaining an entry into the provincial championship which begins today. The Grade 9 girls’ provincial championship also begins today, and the Guildford Park Sabres earned their right to try for the crown by defeating the Delta Pacers.

AAA senior girls
In AAA senior girls basketball, the Elgin Park Orcas advanced to the provincials taking place March 11 – 14. The Orcas latest game was at the Fraser Valley championship, where they were within three seconds of winning against arch rival Riverside. But a last second layup by their opponent meant that the Orcas had to settle for second, losing 79-78. The Orcas look to redeem themselves at the provincials.

AAA senior boys
Two boys AAA teams will also compete at the provincial championships next week. The Fleetwood Park Dragons and the Tamanawis Wildcats will do battle at the PNE Agrodome from March 10 – 14.

Fleetwood coach Nick Day noted that making to it to the provincials with a young team made of Grade 11s was an accomplishment.

For the Wildcats, competing at the next level is especially satisfying after they won a couple of squeakers against both Kwantlen and Fox. Coach Drew Gallacher praised his team for their efforts, as it is the first time that Tamanawis has made it to the provincials.
