Two district schools recognized for getting students moving

With the May 10 Move for Health Day this week, fitness becomes a focus and the district takes the opportunity to congratulate Royal Heights Elementary and Georges Vanier Elementary for being featured as success stories by Action Schools! BC. Action Schools! BC is a best practices model designed to assist schools in creating individualized action plans to promote healthy living.

Both schools registered with Action Schools! BC in 2005 and have their students begin the school day with physical activity lead by other students; a practice that has motivated latecomers to be at school on time.

Students also participate in other physical activities during the day and are educated in healthy eating. Pop is not allowed at Royal Heights and unhealthy foods are discouraged. At Georges Vanier, the Power Kidz club teaches students about healthy eating and cooking.  The result: students at both schools have seen a dramatic improvement in their overall health and fitness.

Action Schools! BC is part of ActNow BC, and contributes to the provincial government's goal of making British Columbia the healthiest jurisdiction to ever host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
