Guildford Park Sabres wrestling team wins several battles, but not the war at provincials

Guildford Park wrestlers once again racked up the medals at the provincial wrestling championships, but couldn’t get a third straight boy's championship.

The team had many outstanding performances which lead to its win in the aggregate team score. The boy’s team placed second and the girl’s team placed fourth in their respective divisions.

On the girl’s team, Gina Carpenter was literally perfect; winning her second straight championship without giving up a single point throughout the tournament. Carpenter finishes her high school career with 3 B.C. championships in the last four years.

A bronze medal win for Kathryn Pike secured the fourth place finish for the team, helping the Guildford girl wrestlers to their best finish ever in their division.

A dislocated elbow for Guildford’s two-time defending provincial champion O.C. Safar was a blow to the team. It was the star athlete’s last high school competition.

Nonetheless, Isaac Bernard, in the lighter 51 kg class, was never really challenged in the tournament and walked away with a gold medal.

Octavio Villena, Leon Bernard, Josh Beatie and Satinder Virk all walked away with silver medals. Beatie’s accomplishment was especially noteworthy as he competed despite having a broken toe, losing by a narrow margin.
