Student champions from the Surrey School District are representing British Columbia at this year’s Canadian Skills Competition from May 25 - 28, 2008 in Calgary.

The journey to the Canadian Skills Competition is a long one for students as they must compete and win at local, regional and provincial events to earn a berth at the nationals. This year, students from the Surrey School District won a total of 16 medals in 11 of 23 categories at the provincial level. View the full list of winners.

Four gold medals won at B.C. Skills Competition

Erin Chung from Earl Marriott won gold in the web design category, continuing a trend of winning web designers from the school. Earl Marriott students have won medals in the web design category at the regional and provincial levels in the past. Most recently, grad Joel Kitching went on to win gold at the WorldSkills Competition in Tokyo, Japan.

This year, Surrey students dominated in web design at the provincial competition, winning all medals in the category. Close on Erin Chung’s heels was Anne Huang of Semiahmoo, winning silver, and Alex Miller of Enver Creek, winning bronze.

The Sullivan Heights Robotics team came home with a gold medal after their robot, SHIM, was the only robot to achieve four perfect-score runs in the robotics competition. The team consisted of Malcolm Jervis, Gabe Leblanc, Patrick Laing, Aaron Smith, Clayton Singh and Kai Singh.

The remaining two gold medals went to Andrew Hernandez of Princess Margaret in the masonry competition and a team from Semiahmoo in the Junior Skills Great Machine category, consisting of Austin Liu, Joy Shen, Alan Sha and Sean Yuen.

National winners move on to international competition

Winning students at the National Skills Competition have a chance to compete at the international level. Canada hosts the 40th WorldSkills Competition in Calgary in September 2009.

Skills Canada is a national, not for profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies to Canadian youth. The Canadian Skills Competition is the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices in the country.
