Each school day, the Surrey School Meal Programs strive to feed as
many children as possible a nutritious meal. Without this food, these students might otherwise go hungry. Research has clearly shown children
who have enough food to eat learn better and are healthier.
At the Elementary Elementary Schools:
Elementary students in Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 7 receive a simple nutritious cold
lunch consisting of milk or 100% fruit juice, a sandwich or similar entrée, and fruit or simple
dessert.
Special arrangements are made to meet the needs of students with proven food allergies,
religious restrictions and special dietary needs; however, the Program cannot feed children with
extensive allergies, very complex special diets or restrictions. Food consumption is closely
monitored to be sure that the children like their lunches and eat the food they receive.
Parents help by paying $1 or as much as they can afford to offset the cost of the meals each
month. The Ministry of Education pays for the balance of the program.
Approximately 2,400 students are fed each day at the following elementary schools:

With financial support from several service clubs and private donors in Surrey, the Employee 50/50 Draw and the Ministry of Education, approximately 200 students participate in Lunch Programs
offered at these loctions: Kwantlen Park, Guildford Park, Queen Elizabeth, Princess
Margaret and at 5 Alternate Secondary Schools. Unfortunately, there is not enough money to feel all the students who would benefit from the School Lunch Program.
In partnership with the Breakfast Clubs of Canada, the Cindrich Breakfast Club was launched in March 2010. Community volunteers work with the Breakfast Coordinator to serve a small group of children a simple healthy breakfast of milk, fruit, cheese or yogurt, cereal and toast every morning. The Club hopes to expand to feed more children at this Inner City School.
