4961 (CJ 11 ) Carpentry & Joinery 11

- Skill Level 1/2

[4 CREDITS - Applied Skills]

Prerequisite: none, or Skill Level 1

This is an introductory course to build furniture. The main objective of this course is to offer a combination of know-ledge and "hands-on" skills that will prove valuable over a lifetime as well as opening doors to a variety of career options. The areas of focus will include a blending of safety, measurement, theory, tools and equipment, and materials and manufacturing processes. Students will apply the acquired skills in the design and construction of teacher-selected projects, such as a coffee table, chair, chest, stool/bench, and skateboards. Students will also design a 3D sign using high-tech equipment and software.

5961 (CJ 12) Carpentry & Joinery 12

- Skill Level 2/3

[4 CREDITS - Applied Skills]

Prerequisite: Carpentry and Joinery 11

Open to those students who have achieved Skill Level 1/2. The main objective of this course is to offer an advanced combination of previously taught knowledge and hands-on skills. The areas of focus will include a blending of safety, measurement, theory tools and equipment, and manufacturing processes. Students will apply the acquired skills in the design and construction of teacher/student selected projects such as Schoolhouse clock, chest, media center, Adirondack chair and skateboards. Students will also design a 3D sign using high-tech equipment and software.

5962 (CJF 12) Carpentry & Joinery 12: Furniture Construction

- Skill Level 2/3

[4 CREDITS - Grade 12]

Prerequisite: Carpentry & Joinery 12 * by permission of instructor

This course is an advanced hands-on course involving the use of woods and wood composites. Students will solve problems involving the design and construction processes of teacher-selected and/or student-selected projects.

Students will be expected to design projects and calculate material amounts and costs. The focus of this program is the construction of stools, chairs, tables, storage units, clocks, chests, and skateboards - CNC Signmaking. A design portfolio will be developed for the storage unit.

5963 (CJW 12) Carpentry & Joinery 12: CNC Wood Processes

- Skill Level 2/3

[4 CREDITS - Grade 12]

Prerequisite: Carpentry & Joinery 12 * by permission of instructor

This course considers the computer in the role of a controlling device and its application as such in the Technology Education classroom. Topics include Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming, safe set-up and operating procedures for CNC machines. During this course students will learn how to use a Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) program not only to create formal 3D models but also to create them from simple 2D clip art and scanned images for use in wooden signs, jewelry, injection moulds and many more applications.

5964 (CJC 12 ) Carpentry & Joinery 12: Cabinet Construction

- Skill Level 2/3

[4 CREDITS - Grade 12]

Prerequisite: Wood Products Advanced or Carpentry & Joinery 12 * by permission of instructor

This is an advanced course involving the use of power tool machining for furniture construction. Mass production techniques and machining will be emphasized in the first half of the term and sold to the public. Students will also design and build a major project emphasizing joinery knowledge acquired from previous courses. This program will also be attached to a Career Preparation Construction Program. Other projects could be made on the CNC such as signs, cabinets, boats, etc.

5967 (UIWPM 12) Wood Products - Intro

Manufacturing: WoodLinks 12 (Skill Level 2)

[4 CREDITS - Grade 12 Applied Skills]

Prerequisite: Wood Technology 9/10

This is an advanced course involving the use of power tool machining for furniture construction. Mass production techniques and machining will be emphasized in the first half of the term and products will be sold to the public. Students will also design and build a major project emphasizing joinery knowledge learned from previous courses. This program will be attached to a Career Preparation Construction Program. At the completion of this program, you will receive an intermediate WoodLinks certificate, which is recognized by the wood industry, UBC, B.C.I.T. and UCC (University of Cariboo).

Note: If you take the Woodlinks co-op, you will complete both Intro and advance WPM, do a three-week work experience, and two other courses in one semester. The 2 WPM certificates that you will receive will open a seat for you at BCIT, UBC or the Caribou College in the Wood products Manufacturing areas.

The co-op would be a great opportunity for you to set up an apprenticeship program and work part or full time with a company of your choice. We have had some great successes in the past (See Mr. Parker or the Career Ed Centre for more details).

5969 (UAWPM 12) Wood Products - Advanced

Manufacturing: WoodLinks 12
