Grade 10, 11 & 12 Drafting

Overview

3913 (YAN 10) Animation 10

[4 CREDITS]

Prerequisite: open to all Grade 10 students

The course introduces students to the world of Computer Graphic (CG) Arts. Students will be involved with introductory HTML, digital art, 3D modeling, texture mapping, lighting, and animation. These techniques form the framework of study for the course. This is a lab-oriented course offering students a practical, "hands-on" approach to problem solving, experimenting, creating, designing and building within the area of CG Arts. Based on computers, students will learn concepts of planning and designing storyboards, creating individual projects using 2D graphic and 3D animation software. This course is recommended for students interested in animation, computer graphic art and digital photography.

4914 (YAN 11) Animation 11

[2 CREDITS - Applied Skills and 2 CREDITS - Fine Arts]

Prerequisite: none, open to all Grade 11 and 12 students

The process of creating computer animation is both an artistic and technical activity. The creation of an animation involves students in a design (problem solving) process, an artistic process, and a technical process. This is an introductory course, based on computers, using Photoshop and Alias Maya. Students will learn concepts of planning and designing storyboards, and creating individual projects using 2D graphic and 3D animation software. This course is oriented toward students interested in computer animation and presentation graphics.

5916 (YAN 12) Animation 12

[2 CREDITS - Applied Skills and 2 CREDITS - Fine Arts]

Prerequisite: open to all Grade 11 and 12 students with Animation 11 or proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, storyboarding, modeling, rigging and animating with Alias Maya

This course provides learning opportunities for students to perceive, respond to, and create moving images, while developing their technical knowledge and skills using the tools of the craft. Industry standards are established and expected, while students direct their own learning experience through activities derived from their own creativity and personal interest.

Students will:

  • use advanced 3D modeling techniques to create complex characters and objects
  • use appropriate lighting techniques to illuminate an animation
  • develop and use custom materials to surface objects
  • analyze motion to determine and create realistic keyframed animation
  • employ correct cinematic techniques to capture the images of an animation
  • render the final animation for output and presentation

5909 (DDT 12) Advanced Studies in CG Arts 12

[2 CREDITS - Applied Skills and 2 CREDITS - Fine Arts]

Prerequisite: Animation 12 or very good proficiency in Adobe Phtoshop, storyboarding, modeling, rigging, animating, texturing, lighting and rendering with Alias Maya - open to all Grade 11 and 12 students with prerequisites

This is an advanced course in CG Arts. The course is a directed study program where students build on previous learning from the prerequisite courses and the areas of Technology Education, Information Technology, and Fine Arts. Students will primarily be working on individually selected special topics and presentation animations. Group work is encouraged where large projects are undertaken. Further studies with Maya and special effects are included along with advanced video editing and output.

Students will produce samples of their work, which will serve as portfolio examples while they explore career opportunities in the field. This course is oriented toward those interested in careers in CG Arts.
