Career Education Department


The Career Education Department offers a variety of services. Using programs like ‘Career Cruising’ students can receive advice and direction on career choices. The Career Education Department also places grade 10, 11 and 12 students on work experience where they can complete Work Experience 12A, 12B, or complete the 30 hours required for their Grad Transition Plan.

The Career Education Department works in with local employers as well as the Surrey School District Career Department to offer the following programs.

  • Horticulture
  • Joinery
  • Masonry
  • Millwright
  • Parts & Warehousing
  • Plumbing
  • Steel Fabrication
  • Welding

These programs are offered are at different locations. Only the Joinery Program is located at Fleetwood Park. Students applying must have completed grade 10 and be able to get themselves to a facility offering the program. Most programs are for one semester in either grade 11 or 12, but some may be two semesters. Application packages are available in the Career Education Office.


Instructors in these programs will assist students in gaining an apprenticeship position. Students who complete 480 hours of practical experience are eligible for a $1000 scholarship. Those that have completed these hours as well as a partnership program can move into the second year of their apprenticeship.


Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA)

Students who are employed with a journeyman in a recognized trade are eligible to register with the Industrial Training Authority (ITA) and receive high school credits for that training. They are also eligible for the $1000 scholarship mentioned above. Students DO NOT need to be enrolled in a district partnership program in order to register as a SSA student.
