Teacher Car Pool

The Surrey Green Teacher Network would like to assist staff in finding someone to car pool with. To do this, they have set up a car pooling conference in FirstClass.

To get to the conference, open FirstClass on your computer or login online and go to:

  1. SD36 Staff Conferences (should be on your FirstClass desktop)
  2. Teachers Conference
  3. TEAC-LSA Conferences
  4. Green Teacher Network
  5. Car Pooling

You may post your route and see if there is someone who would like to share the ride, or read through the existing postings to see if there is someone with a similar route as yours.

Benefits of Car Pooling

Read what district teachers have to say about the benefits of car pooling:

Even if you car pool one day a week that is a 20% reduction in energy use and you will save money on your gas bill. You could car pool one direction and take public transit the other and still reduce your "environmental footprint". ~Karen Kilbride

I carpool with 5 people. We have a spot where there is free street parking, and we meet there at a set time each day. We take turns driving so in a regular week that means I may only drive once. After 2 years with this group, we have noticed these benefits from our car pooling:

  • WE SAVE A LOT OF MONEY!!! Imagine filling up once a month instead of once per week! It's like we spend 35 cents per litre on gas!
  • We leave at a routine time, which makes the school day seem shorter and more manageable.
  • Improved collegiality. When we talk about our school day, the other folks in the car pool listen, give advice and offer suggestions. Plus, we are from different departments and have found many chances to collaborate which we normally wouldn't.
  • Less wear and tear on our cars.
  • Emergency lesson plan delivery. If we are suddenly ill or away, there are four people easily available to help with emergency situations.
  • More use of transit. Once you get yourself out of your car, it is also easier to get into transit, either with occasional return trips or just the changed mindset that comes with this surrender.
