Mr. Tamboline’s Biography & Philosophy

Born in Kitimat, BC, lived in Montreal, QC, Yukon Territory & various cities in BC including Kamloops and Victoria.

After working in the construction and accounting fields for over 20 years I returned to school and earned my education degree with a major in technology. I began teaching in 2000 and got my first full time teaching position at Earl Marriott in 2001.

I believe that real world experiences (outside of academia) have taught me the value of patience and perseverance. In the role of teacher I find that being empathic and honest with students earns greater rewards and respect compared to teachers who try to maintain control as tyrants or dictators. I suppose this was learned from various employers over the years. Co-operation and effort is attained by facilitating it rather than demanding it from people. There are always exceptions to this and some students will try to take advantage of any freedoms they are given. One important lesson I’ve learned is that every new class of students will bring a fresh set of challenges and rewarding experiences.

I’ve taught Math, Power Mechanics, Woodwork, Science & Technology & my current courses in Drafting and Glassworks.

The glassworks course has been a great experience and I’m amazed at the popularity of this elective. I think glass working classes have risen in popularity due to the students’ social network. When a student completes an appealing, personalized project they love to show it to friends who become interested and want to try the course themselves. Glassworks is a project based course, similar to Woodwork or Metalwork but without any of the large, noisy, dusty machines.

The safe, creative aspect of the course appeals to a wide cross section of the junior and senior student population. I hope to maintain the current popularity by investigating more processes and developing projects to explore those processes. I am currently slumping and bending glass in the kiln to form dishes, bowls and vases in the hope that senior glass students will have the opportunity to safely form a unique piece of glass art.

Drafting classes are not popular or well promoted at Earl Marriott due to the fact that there have been a number of different teachers in recent years. I hope to revitalize this aspect of Technology Education as it is a vital aspect of many trades and professions. The days of countless hours drawing with a pencil are gone as drafting and design work has gone digital to a large degree. We offer senior courses in mechanical and architectural drafting for students who have completed the introductory levels.

Thanks to the support of our school PAC the drafting lab acquired a lab license for Cinema 4D. This 3D animation software has allowed us to offer the provincial government’s Technical Visualization course, known in the school as Computer Animation 11. This course is intended as an introductory course but it is evident by student progress that there will some high quality visual projects come out of the first class of students. For more information on my current courses please check out my course outlines. I also invite and appreciate your constructive comments and advice. Thank-you.
