INFORMATION

Along with the twice a week On Ice schedule, the students participate in two Fitness / PE Gym sessions under the guidance of the PE teacher at their respective school. This includes the popular Floorball sport, which uses modified sticks and creates a floor hockey game in the gym which simulates on ice puck skills, while allowing great competition and fun for the students. This past semester the students attended a monthly session at Cyclone Taylor Training Center, which gave them an opportunity to experience supervised training on the skating treadmill, shooting gallery and puck zone. Students also attend the Vancouver Canucks NHL practise at GM Place each semester.

As well, our program offers a weekly Classroom block. During this classroom session, the students will be taught a curriculum which will add to their knowledge of hockey in the areas of Nutrition, Fitness training techniques, Strength and Conditioning, Coaching, Media, Leadership, and Hockey Tactics. Whenever possible, Guest Speakers are used in the classroom to present first-hand expertise on their professional experiences. The students can study hockey history, research favourite teams and players, and complete assignments which include training programs and nutrition plans for tournaments. The ability of students to gain confidence in public speaking situations and lead peer groups is integrated into these projects.

The students who participate in the HCSA program receive Physical Education course credit at their respective school, as authorized by the Surrey School District. Each student registers for “ PE – Hockey Skills” , which is open to all Grade 8-10 students at Elgin Park, Semiahmoo, and Earl Marriott Secondary Schools. The students receive a letter grade and percentage mark, based on Physical Education department grading standards at each school. The On Ice, Classroom, and Fitness areas are blended to form an overall student grade. Work habits, student improvement, attitude, and leadership are specific areas of focus for the program.
