THE PROGRAM'S GOAL
Our mandate is to maximize the development of every player in the class. This requires a strong commitment to ensuring small groups, with effective teaching, in a progressive manner. Our model follows a plan of 5 instructors for each ice session, which allows small group skill work with 4 coaches each leading a small group, as well as having the dedicated professional Goalie Instructor working with the goalies each day. Groupings are flexible and may be determined by skill, by age, by size, or adjusted to allow leadership skills to be encouraged in a particular teaching block.
Graduating players have shown incredible progress, and the involvement in the Hockey Canada Skills Academy – Semiahmoo plays a significant role. While a few, like Semiahmoo Secondary graduate Colton Gillies, reach the elite levels of the NHL Minnesota Wild and winning gold with the National Junior Team, others have reached their goals at other levels. Hillary Pattenden from Elgin Park Secondary obtained opportunities with the Canadian Women’s National team program and a NCAA scholarship. Players have moved into Rep team positions at the Bantam and Midget levels with the Semiahmoo Minor Hockey Association teams, gone on to Major Midget, Jr. B., BCHL Jr. A, and the WHL.
Our program is very proud of all our graduates. Some have become involved in officiating, and the leadership and confidence gained as a product of our program have given them the knowledge and skills to become team captains and leaders on many of their club teams. The philosophy is to develop the hockey skills and team-first attitudes of every student, and each individual success is valued and celebrated. Whether a player has a goal in elite-level hockey or simply wishes to gain the skills necessary to enjoy the game recreationally, the program offers the student the opportunity and path to reach their goals. |
