THE PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Hockey Canada Skills Academy is a volunteer, community initiative, which began in 2004. The three local Secondary schools in the White Rock – South Surrey area are operated under the district licence agreement with Hockey Canada. It has been developed on the foundation of the national program offered in over 100 schools across Canada under the jurisdiction of Hockey Canada.

Our program offers each individual student the opportunity to develop their hockey skills, while improving their knowledge of the game as players, athletes, and team mates. We are also committed to teaching the values of leadership and how each student may make a positive impact on the game of hockey for years to come.

The program’s On Ice instructors have developed our on ice skills teaching based on the national curriculum and attend an annual summer training workshop with Hockey Canada staff in Calgary every August. During this seminar, each Hockey Academy from across the country is invited to share Best Practises from their local model, and develop new curriculum and efficient operations. Our staff have presented our on ice model at the national seminar in 2006, in both Calgary and London. Our local program has benefited greatly through mentorship from elite coaches, including veteran NHL and National Team coaches Mike Johnston and Mike Kelly, which has added to our drill base and overall hockey curriculum. Teaching and coaching player’s skills requires a specialized philosophy and hockey curriculum, and this is a challenge our staff has met.

The Hockey Canada Skills Academy course provides high school students, with a passion and interest in hockey, the opportunity to develop their skills and hockey knowledge. As a course offered to the Grade 8-10 student group, it matches well with the physical development and growing maturity of the student-athlete. While the opportunity is great, it is important the student understands the effort and commitment necessary to realize their potential during the semester in the program. Those that have experienced success have all demonstrated a high degree of dedication and personal perseverance to meet their goals. We are excited to play a role in providing this opportunity!
