What is Career Education?

  • Delivered mainly at the Grade 11 and 12 level.
  • Programs that provide opportunities for students to gain real life work experience and explore different career options.
  • Programs include Career Preparation, Cooperative Education, Secondary School Apprenticeship.
  • Includes all career related activities at the senior secondary level.
  • Surrey is regarded in the province as a leader in career education.

Benefits to Students

  • Allows students the opportunity to explore different career options
  • Provides students with a realistic look at the changing Labour Market.
  • Provides students with critical job seeking skills (resumes, interview skills, etc.) and attitudes required for the workplace.
  • Direct link between classroom instruction and what is occurring in industry.
  • Gives students an appreciation for the education/training required for the career of their choice.
  • Provides students with a link to post-secondary education.
  • Can provide post-secondary course credit.
  • Gives students a definite "leg-up" on entering the increasingly competitive Post Secondary co-op programs, i.e. Engineering, Computer Sciences, etc.
  • Increased self-confidence, self-esteem and confidence in their job related skills.

Initiatives/Projects

  • Increasing the number of Articulation Agreements - Increased laddering of Career Prep programs to Post Secondary programs.
  • New Career Programs that reflect the changing labour market.
  • Partnership Programs
  • Secondary School Apprenticeship Programs - credits students with 480 hours of indentured service, as well as the opportunity for $1,000 scholarship.
  • Skills Canada - showcasing student career talents.
  • Take Our Kids To Work - one day job shadow for all grade nine students.
  • RCMP Youth Academy - provides career exploration through simulated policing work experience.
  • Junior Achievement - 1 day conference for grade 9/10 students on the economics of staying in school.
  • Other initiatives include: Rona Foundation Program, Barrista, Emily Carr, Floral Design, and Surrey City Hall Mentorship, etc.
